Busy morning at “Johnstone’s shoeing”, a trim, 2 shoeings and reshoe a mare with navicular issues, then took the new #1 apprentice to lunch & a well deserved beer !!!

Working on a nice mare that has an injured hock + infection in her bone —
Dr caroline outlined a shoe with a lifted heel and a wide bar as well, the wide bar adds support & stops the heel falling through the shoe pack — shoe was modified using a worn out rasp gor var stock, shaped in the forge and mig welded up then brought to a tidy finish on the belt linisher .
The heel lift takes the stress of the injury
Shoe is fitted and finished !!!

I haven’t posted any shoeing jobs/ cases for quite some time, theres been plenty on but I get the “blinkers” on and forget to take photos.
When I deliver a shoeing clinic I say that horsemanship also plays a part — we do have to work on a live animal!!
So— this lovely thoroughbred mare was dictating to me and being a thorough little monster. This is where horsemanship 101 comes into the farrier work !!!
To the round yard, tie her front leg up and chase her around — until she licks her lips and wants to come to me.
As you can see in the photos I then shod her, standing free, no restraints, no drugs and no belting the horse
Win win— “Lilly” Will be so nice to shoe next time.

A vet case recently— a lady phoned me RE: a young handled but unbroken horse which had torn its lateral ( outside) heel on its off side ( right) hind.
At the vet clinic the young horse taken care of by Dr Caroline Spelta and her very good equine team.
We removed the torn portion, the wound was scrubbed clean, treated and dressed.
While I had the chance I gave the tensing hooves a quick trim and tidy up
The lady will contact me when the wound has dried up, as per Dr Caroline’s advise to the owner and then I’ll fit a shoe to give the hoof support and allow the new heel quarter to grow down.
Happy horse, happy owner —- another great job done by everyone involved .

I’d like to thank Jessica at Moray Downs and the ACC beef company for choosing me to run a basic shoeing clinic.
The great young staff were enthusiastic and respectful— it made me feel proud to stand in front of them.

Okay here’s another one — this was one of those jobs that really leaves you feeling good !!!
A injured hind, and, this is where it’s great working with such a talented vet ( Dr Caroline Worsley) and her team, which of course I feel lucky to be a part of
The hoof prep is just basics, the shoe is modified ( some days I’m a boiler maker too) to support the hoof and allowing his injured tendons to heal, by keeping the Pastern stable as he walks — allowing healing
Once again it all begins with basics

Thinking that what I do is mundane has stopped me from posting for a good while
However the importance of good basics has me posting once again
This lovely kind mare has some tendon issues, but what was needed mostly was some care and attention taken whilst shoeing
I prepped her feet, paying attention to having both hooves the same length, heel angles as close as possible this first shoeing, addressing flares and imbalances and having her coronary bands level and parallel to the ground surface —- and the fact her hooves we’re migrating forward and not providing good support under her bony column ( legs)
So it was a 3 degree wedge heel shoe to help bring hoof & Pastern angles into a more natural alignment, which also alleviates some stress of her tendons, then fit the shoe back at the white line which puts support under her legs and by improving breakover as she walks, takes stress of the front of the hoof wall
Yeh just mundane stuff eh!!’
