Personal but relevant and interesting.
Medical Miracles and Mindfulness
Thirteen years ago today, our lives changed forever. Our then 4-year-old son was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. Today, I am very happy to say he is a thriving 17-year-old, ready to start Year 12. The journey that began on January 14, 2012, has come full circle to this very day, January 14, 2025 when we had our final meeting with our oncologist.
What I’m about to share could be mistaken for a clever marketing story, but it’s not—it’s my truth. And for those who know me well, I hope you’ll see it that way too. At the start of this year, I started to transition my passion project, Gintybunny, into Childfulness—a mindfulness-focused, family-centered business that has been years in the making. Where we will be running Family Fulness Workshops.
Mindfulness entered my life just a few months into my son’s treatment, during one of the darkest and most uncertain times we faced. Having lost 15 kilos in two weeks and with no hair, we had no guarantees about what the future held.
I decided in a moment of utter despair that since I couldn’t predict or control the future, I would focus on being present. The odds didn’t matter to me anymore—because, really, who knows what side of those odds you’re on? Instead of fearing a future without him or feeling guilt for the past, I chose to fully live in each moment, even the hard ones.
Being present gave me the strength to embrace every moment we had, no matter how painful. Shortly after his treatment, I began meditating, took a Reiki course, and dove into mindfulness and yoga therapy studies.
Mindfulness transformed my life. It allowed me to face challenges with courage, support others with empathy, and seek help when I needed it most. It has the power to make any situation better by grounding you in the present moment, improving relationships, and even enhancing physical health. Most importantly, it helps you not miss your life, even in its hardest moments.
I want to thank the incredible teams at the Royal Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where our journey began, and the Queensland Children’s Hospital where it concluded. Hearing our oncologist tell our son what a wonderful young man he’s become—and reminding him to wear sunscreen and go
live his life—was the perfect way to close this chapter.
To all the families who shared those hospital days with us, especially the Turner Ward families—you are forever in my heart. Here’s to us and our little miracles, wherever they are.
