Irritable bowel syndrome affects between 4% to 11% of all people. It can be debilitating and leads to a loss of quality of life.
A recent study from the University of Michigan provides evidence that supports the adoption of the Mediterranean Diet for IBS sufferers. In the randomised controlled trial, the Low FODMAP diet and Mediterranean diet were directly compared to see what offered the most symptom relief for suffers of IBS.
This study looked at the degree to which the diets reduced IBS induced abdominal pain intensity symptoms by 30%. This is an FDA standard endpoint.
They found that 81% of those on the FODMAP diet met this endpoint and 73% of those on the Mediterranean diet me this endpoint. Both diets worked very well, in this regard.
Whilst the FODMAP diet was more effective, it is restrictive and typically, quite hard to follow.
It is reassuring to know that the Mediterranean diet has a documented benefit to those with IBS, in addition to all of it's other well-documented benefits. So, eat like a Mediterranean and enjoy the flavours, conviviality and the better health that follows 😀
In a comparative pilot study, the Mediterranean diet and the low FODMAP diet both provided relief for patients with IBS.
