Local resident Stuart Hickson shares his story concerning an Eastern Brown snake bite.
‐----‐--------------------

I’m honestly quite embarrassed by my stupid mistake, and now the video is going viral at my expense. That said, posting it in the ( Snake Identification group) quite literally saved my life, so my ego can take the hit.

The snake was at my sister’s house, and I went to help, thinking the baby brown snake was a harmless tree snake. Handling it was an incredibly dumb thing to do, and I hope others can learn from my mistake.

I was bitten around 9:10 p.m. and called the ambos at 9:35 p.m. They arrived at 9:40, and by that point, I wasn’t showing any symptoms. Honestly, I felt embarrassed for wasting their time, but they immediately bandaged my arms tightly and calmly started the trip to the hospital around 9:55.

Five minutes into the trip, the symptoms hit fast and hard. The ambos quickly organized to meet up with their critical response team, who carry more advanced drugs and have more experience for cases like this.

By 10:10 p.m., I was close to being unresponsive, and they had to pull over to treat me. Even though I couldn’t respond, I could hear everything, and it was clear how stressed the paramedics were as they struggled to find veins due to my blood flow slowing down.

It’s all a bit of a blur from there, but I made it to the ED, where they kept pumping me with drugs while deciding on the right antivenom. I had told the paramedics it was a brown snake, but I learned later they didn’t want to risk it and gave me a polyvalent antivenom that covers most snake species in Australia.

I knew I was in bad shape, but I didn’t realize just how bad. I learned today that I went into peri-arrest and was in critical condition. The hospital staff told me I’m lucky to be alive, which is both sobering and deeply humbling—especially as someone with a young family. One of the senior paramedics even said it was the worst snake bite reaction he’d seen in his long career.

I’m still in ICU but feeling much better now and hopeful I’ll be out tomorrow.

This group literally saved my life, and while I’ll take the laughs at my expense, I have a young family and I’m alive—that’s what really matters. Lesson learned, and I hope others can learn from my mistake too. Thank you again for everything.

Snake bites & Ambulance on site! 😮

Elderly lady at Sheldon bitten by a dark coloured snake. Ambulances were on their way & I could not get there quick enough.

I know this more rural area of Sheldon well& was hoping this was not an Eastern brown bite.

The room was full of furniture & odds & ends.
I thought it was going to take a long time to find it ( that's if I could find it).

I didn't take much video, as I needed to be on my toes in case I had an Eastern brown around me.

After a quick look, I ran to the Ambulance to ask where in the house she had been bitten?
She said at the T.V. So that's where I ran back and pulled out the old dvd & vcr player & that's where this guy popped up from.

I honestly can't tell you all the sigh of relief that came over me. I then ran to the Ambulance as it was about to leave & identified the snake to them.

They took a few pics of the snake & left for the hospital with their much relieved patient.
(Wonder how long they waited at the Redlands Hospital?).

Thankfully a great outcome on what could have been a horror of a job.

Today was a Sh*t job ( Literally).
Redlands City Council called me to remove 3 snakes that found their way into a deep sewerage pit. ( over 6 meters).
As there was no way to get down there, the amazing R.C.C crew made a makeshift pole with rope.
It took us an hour of trying to snag them, but we finally got all 3 snakes from the deep dark "Smelly Depths" and they were safely released back into the wild.

Currently my snake bag is drying on the clothesline after being heavily disinfected.
It was an unusual but rewarding job.

No snakes were harmed, but I'm pretty sure my nostrils got some damage 😯!

(The species are called Freshwater snakes)
