How was your week?

As we wrap up another week, here’s a gentle reminder to all of us: struggling doesn’t mean we are failing.

Sometimes our brains just need a break especially when executive functioning is working overtime.

Wishing you a restful weekend ahead. 🍷

PSA: You are allowed to have an off day.

Executive functioning shifts with sleep, stress, hormones, light, illness, and the demands of your schedule. Some days your brain has more access to planning, focus, and follow-through. Some days it does not! And that's OKAY!

When things feel harder than usual, pause and ask: What does my brain need today? More rest? Fewer tasks?

Lower the bar enough to keep moving. Protect your energy and return tomorrow. ❤️

Great news for families of children with speech sound disorders, stuttering or cleft palate- accessing speech pathology support has become a little more affordable!

From 1 March 2026, Medicare will allow eligible children and young people under 25 years of age to access additional speech pathology assessment and therapy for the following conditions:

• Stuttering
• Speech sound disorders, including:
– articulation disorders
– phonological disorders
– childhood apraxia of speech (also known as dyspraxia or developmental verbal dyspraxia)
– dysarthria
• Cleft lip and/or palate

Who is eligible?
To access these services, the young person must:
• be under 25 years of age
• have a referral from a GP or specialist

What support is available through Medicare?

Eligible individuals may be able to access speech pathology sessions subsidised by Medicare, including:

• Up to 8 assessment sessions
• Up to 20 treatment sessions

These sessions are a total allocation that can be used anytime before the person turns 25 - note thay they are not renewed each calendar year.

They are also separate from the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, which allows up to 5 allied health visits per calendar year, including speech pathology.

Early intervention matters, and accessing support early can make a meaningful difference to a child’s speech, communication and learning.

Why visual struggles don’t always start with reading…

There’s often confusion around visual perception and why some children with “perfect vision” still struggle with reading, writing, copying from the board, or focusing on visual tasks.

So what’s really going on?

Visual development begins long before academics. If key visual skills don’t fully develop early on, it can quietly impact learning later, especially in school.

Many kids pass eye exams, yet still struggle with tracking, visual discrimination, visual memory, and spatial awareness. These aren’t eyesight problems, they’re visual processing challenges.

What early visual skills matter, what warning signs to watch for, and how gaps in visual development can affect learning as demands increase.

Tiny machine. Big answers.

In this photo, our Speech Pathologist (who is also a Provisional Audiologist) is using a tympanometer or TYMP to complete tympanometry testing.

🔎 What is tympanometry (TYMP)?
It’s a quick, objective test that checks how well the middle ear is working. It measures how the eardrum moves in response to gentle air pressure changes.

👂 In everyday terms?
It helps us see if:
• There could be fluid behind the eardrum
• The ear feels “blocked” or under pressure
• Helps to tell if grommet is insitu and doing its job
• The eardrum isn’t moving as freely as it should
• Sound might not be getting through as clearly as it needs to

⏱ It’s fast, non-invasive, and doesn’t require your child to say or do anything.

👂 Access to sound lays the foundation for listening and communication skills 🗣

💫 Before we build communication skills, we need to make sure the sound is getting through clearly. 💫

❗️That’s why, when a child presents with language delay, we routinely recommend a hearing assessment.

Even mild or fluctuating middle ear issues can affect:
• Speech sound development
• Listening accuracy
• Vocabulary growth
• Following instructions
• Auditory processing skills

Sometimes what looks like a language delay is simply reduced access to clear sound.

❓️Did you know❓️

Triple L has both Speech Pathologists and
Audiologists - and some of our clinicians are dual-qualified. That means we can assess hearing and communication together, not in isolation.

Please note: We do not conduct hearing assessments for children under 3 years old.

If you have any concerns about how your child is listening or speaking, a hearing check is a good place to start!

There’s a scientific reason starting is the hardest part for both kids and adults.

Task initiation takes real energy. When a task feels unclear, effortful, or emotionally loaded, the brain hesitates. It happens to everybody.

For kids with language, literacy or executive functioning challenges, the load is heavier — the starting line feels further away. Can you imagine asking them to do a big job after a long day at school?

So we lower the bar: one sentence, a small chunk, a 2-minute timer, clear instructions… and big patience. Momentum builds, little steps count.

And let’s be honest… who else has made a coffee first… and then another one… before actually starting a report? 🙋‍♀️😅

Procrastination isn’t laziness - it’s science. That makes me feel a bit better, lol. 😉

Happy Friday!!

Starting really is the hardest part, and there’s a good brain-based reason for that. 🧠

Task initiation asks your brain to spend extra energy upfront, especially when a task feels unclear, boring, or emotionally loaded. That resistance you feel is your brain protecting its resources.

One way to work with this is to lower the bar to starting, not finishing.

Add music. Write down one tiny step. Set a short timer. Give your brain a clear on-ramp and an endpoint.

Once you’re in motion, things often feel easier because your brain has already done the hardest part.

You’ve got this. Progress counts. Little by little! ❤️

Speech Therapy should be fun!

If it looks like we’re just playing…we probably are and that’s exactly the point!

For preschoolers with language delay, play is where the real communication happens. When they’re relaxed- pushing cars, feeding dinosaurs, building towers- that’s when we hear their best language.

That’s when:
• new words pop up
• little sentences start joining together
• they attempt longer phrases
• they practise turn-taking
• they show us what they really understand

Young children learn language through interaction, through shared attention and through fun.

In the preschool years, the brain is incredibly ready for language growth. That’s why early intervention matters so much. The earlier we support vocabulary, sentence structure and comprehension, the stronger the foundation for literacy and learning later on.

That “toy” we're holding?
It’s a tool.

✔️ We're modelling grammar.
✔️ We're expanding sentences.
✔️ We're building narrative skills.
✔️ We're supporting social communication.

But to the child...we’re just playing.

And that’s how it should feel. 💛

Writing shouldn’t feel overwhelming but for some children, it really is.

If your child struggles to organise ideas on paper, spell words accurately, or write clearly, dysgraphia may be part of the picture.

In our article below, we unpack:
• What dysgraphia is
• The different types of dysgraphia
• How it affects writing and learning
• The role of speech pathologists in assessment and intervention

At Triple L, our speech pathologists have a strong area of interest in Specific Learning Disorders, including dysgraphia and dyslexia, and work closely to understand the underlying language and literacy challenges behind writing difficulties.

In this article, we will delve into what Dysgraphia is, the different types, and the critical role speech therapists play in its assessment and intervention.

As we start another school year for our children, some kids step into the classroom feeling excited - while others carry frustration, anxiety, or self-doubt around reading and writing.
Dyslexia is more common than many realise, and with the right understanding, children can thrive.

If you’re wondering whether dyslexia may be part of your child’s learning profile or want to better understand what dyslexia really looks like, we invite you to read our full article below 👇

“Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder that predominantly affects reading skills. It can vary greatly in its severity and impact from person to person.”
