October is Dyslexia awareness month!
Resharing this to give more awareness what dyslexia is and its related symptoms.
This week is World Dyslexia Week! We're resharing our insights on Dyslexia to raise awareness and help others understand it better.
What is Dyslexia?
It is a specific learning disorder that predominantly affects reading skills. It involves challenges in accurately and fluently recognizing words, spelling, and decoding written language.
Children with Dyslexia may struggle with tasks such as reading comprehension, phonological awareness, and word retrieval.
It's important to note that Dyslexia is a neurobiological condition that can vary in its severity and impact from person to person.
Some symptoms of Dyslexia according to Australian Dyslexia Association are:
➡️Problems learning sound- letter and letter-sound matching for reading and spelling.
➡️Difficulty in sounding out and quickly recognising single words.
➡️Reading slowly with many mistakes and difficulty recognising familiar, high- frequency words from one line to the next in a text.
➡️Poor spelling (associated with accompanying Dysgraphia)
➡️Poor visual gestalt / coding (orthographic coding)
➡️Reading comprehension can be impeded as a result of the above and/or poor language processing development.
❗️Early detection and intervention is important to assist the child suspected of Dyslexia.
What is the benefit of seeing a Speech Pathologist in relation to Dyslexia?
✔️A Speech Pathologist can investigate or rule out any other underlying conditions such as auditory processing disorder, dyspraxia (by referring to an OT when indicated) , and/or speech or language disorder.
✔️ A Speech Pathologist can perform a full assessment of speech, language, auditory processing, auditory perceptual, reading comprehension and written language skills and can (with additional training/special interest in literacy skills) give a formal diagnosis of Specific Learning Impairments in Dyslexia (and Dysgraphia which we will post about in the future).
✔️A Speech Pathologist can provide evidence-based therapy tailor-made for your specific child’s needs according to the outcomes of the assessment.
✔️ A Speech Pathologist can target speech production and language difficulties (that may underpin literacy difficulties), as well as literacy-based challenges all within the same targeted therapy session.
