SBS wrote an article about Michael, who is an active and valuable member of the lifeguard team at Port Macquarie Life Saving Club.

"There were some days where I woke up and … I just wanted to give up," he said.

"It [surf lifesaving] helps me to keep thinking, 'Well, I can do things and if it helps someone in the community, then it's worthwhile."

The club President says Michael had become an "invaluable member of our team" since joining in 2024.

"We work with his strengths, just like we would with any other member of our patrol," she said.

True inclusion is seeing people's strengths, where they can contribute and including them to be able to utilise those skills to the best of their abilities.

Great work Michael and the Port Macquarie Life Saving Club, showing the rest of how to get it done!

Lucia is proof that people with disabilities can be successful active members of patrols, making meaningful contributions to the team. We applaud Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club on their commitment to inclusion and showing the rest of Australia what can be achieved together.

May stories like this become the norm!

Image description: Two people are at the beach, one sitting in a wheelchair holding a pair of beach shoes while the other stands beside them with a cane and a hand resting supportively on their shoulder. Both are wearing sun hats, and the ocean waves are visible in the background. Text on the image reads “DONATE NOW TO MAKE AN IMPACT,” and a small “Accessible Beaches” logo appears in the corner.

Australia's Most Accessible Beach Pilot is almost at its end!

There are only three weeks left of Australia’s first fully staffed accessible beach pilot. We can't believe it, we've had such a blast down at Frankston over the Summer.

So if you have been thinking about giving it a go, book your daybeds now! There's a heap of beach wheelchairs and walkers, shade, and friendly staff to help everyone enjoy the water.

Following the article in the Daily Telegraph earlier this week regarding pram parking, accessible Beaches Australia's Bern Walker says “When the ramp is filled with prams, as shown in the TikTok, then access for people in wheelchairs and mobility challenges is hindered,”

"When these scenes are regularly occurring it is the responsibility of the council to find a solution that enables access for everyone...Whatever solution is reached, the access needs of everyone need to be considered, particularly people with disabilities and mobility challenges, including our ageing population that may have difficulty navigating the sand.

She goes on to say “Universal access just makes sense, then people with prams and beach carts can use them also.”

What do you think about scenes like this? What do you think needs to change?

REPOST !

American expat Lex B was surprised learning about the beach mats at Noosa Beach. Accessible Beaches Australia advocates to make more beaches in Australia accessible.

Kitting out a beach to make it permanently accessible can cost as little as $30,000 and often less if the infrastructure is already in place, with a bus stop installation usually costing double this amount", says Shane Hryhorec, Founder and Chair of Accessible Beaches Australia.

He goes on to say it's “not an unsolvable problem” and more funding would revolutionise our beloved beaches.

Grant applications are currently open for Tranche 2 of Accessible Australia funding. Councils and NFP's can apply for:

Inclusive beaches - 100% of costs for portable equipment such as beach matting, beach wheelchairs, beach walkers and portable ramps. Up to $30,000
Portable Changing Places - 100% of costs up to $200,000
Fixed place Changing Places - 50% of costs up to $125,000

How to apply?
