Tranquability Yoga for over 50's Yoga for over 50's, seniors and the not so supple. Small classes, individual attention, poses are modified to suit the individual.

New and experienced students are welcome to practice with like minded people. Small classes, individual attention, alternative poses are offered as required. If you can't go to the floor chair yoga options are accommodated within the general class.

Improve your posture - stand tall!

Posture is the way in which you hold yourself while sitting, standing, and lying down. Good posture is important to allow our organs to work better, think of your lungs. We all spend too much time sitting and tend to hunch our shoulders.

Practice the following poses regulary and they will improve your posture:

Cancer and Yoga

No-one wants hear the diagnosis starting with C for Cancer. Sadly, over 160,000 people were diagnosed in 2022 in Australia.

Treatment options have improved and as the result survival rates (living 5 years after diagnosis) are on the rise. The treatment leaves the patients fatigued, depressed or anxious and patients usually have deal with unwanted side effects.

Cancer Council NSW lists yoga, meditation and relaxation as complimentary therapies. It means it is evidence based therapy.

The benefits of regular yoga practice are: help with sleep, with pain management, increases muscle tone and breathing techniques help to quieten the anxious mind.

I recently started to teach yoga in oncology rehabilitation and expression of interest is required to start a small class in Bondi Junction area.

It is chair yoga, which is accessable and inclusive form of yoga.

Diabetes and Yoga

It’s estimated that around 1.9 million Australians (about 5.5% of the population) are living with all types of diabetes. There is evidence that lifestyle changes (diet and exercise especially) reduce the effect of this progressive disease.

The benefits of yoga in the management of diabetes:
Helps insulin work more efficiently.
Maintains and achieves a healthy body composition.
Lowers blood pressure / reduces risk of heart disease.
Reduces stress.
Increases energy levels.
Enhances mood.
Improves sleep.

Yoga props
I have been using yoga props for over 30 years and the benefits are numerous: one can go into a pose deeper, with better alignment and one is able to reap the benefits of the poses. Using a block or chair - they bring the floor closer to you.

My yoga props include: mat with good grip, two blocks, a fold-up chair, a strap, one or two blankets. I love my bolster too, they help with chest opening and/or relaxation.

Props are for old and young, new and experienced students.

October 2022 is Mental Health Month in Australia

We all know someone who has or had mental health challenges which affect their lifestyle.

Extract from ABS (July 2022):
Over two in five Australians aged 16-85 years (43.7% or 8.6 million people) had experienced a mental disorder at some time in their life;
One in five (21.4% or 4.2 million people) had a 12-month mental disorder;
Anxiety was the most common group of 12-month mental disorders (16.8% or 3.3 million people);
Almost two in five people (39.6%) aged 16-24 years had a 12-month mental disorder;

Yoga philosophy teaches us the eight limbs of yoga with the aim to quieten the busy mind. The last three limbs or stages are associated with meditation (concentrating on a single point (i.e. watching your breath), meditation (uninterrupted flow of concentration) contemplation and full bliss.

Meditation might not be suitable for those with serious mental illness or who experienced trauma.

Classes are sequenced to increase stamina, strength, flexibility and balance.

Poses are modified to suit the individual, accommodating their pre-existing medical conditions.
