We found this beautiful Austropaxillus down by the causeway where have been working to restore the riverbanks. David and Elijah from were kind enough to get me to stop and smell the fungi, with mixed results #stinkhorn (picture coming).

After spraying the seed in the interows with mycorrhizal fungi, we let the crop grow for a few months to build soil health. The seed activation creates the platform for mycorrhizal fungi to grow in the soil and the plant root becomes the carrier.
Today, our awesome new farmhand Tom (yes, we now have two Tom's) took us back to the 80s—rolling through with a giant crimper, as an alternative to mulching. Unlike mulch, which generates a lot of heat, crimping lays the crop down while keeping the soil ecosystem intact. We'll let you know how the mulched and crimped rows compare further down the track.
The tall crop you see is millet, but our cover crop mix is packed with diverse plants to nourish the soil. We also crimped the sunflowers—great food for birds, but unfortunately, the rats love them too! Luckily, more habitat boxes are coming soon, which means more owls to keep things in balance. 🦉🌾
