🐭👃 “Something Smells Squeak-tacular!”👃🐭
-
In this week’s Tiny Teachables, we’re sniffing out the secrets of rats’ incredible sense of smell, because these clever critters use their noses for much more than sniffing snacks!
-
Rats use their keen sense of smell to communicate, navigate, and explore their world. They naturally scent-mark to establish territories and recognise their surroundings.
-
You can enrich your rat’s environment by providing scented items or hiding treats for them to find. These little sniffing adventures stimulate their minds and keep them happily engaged.
-
Understanding how important smell is for rats helps you provide a more exciting and satisfying life for your furry friends!

🐹✨ A long road to a perfect desexing ✨🐹
-
🏥 These two perfect piggy patents have been waiting a while for their big desexing day! Back in late 2024, they came in for their pre-desexing check, where our team discovered some underlying health issues. It’s important that Guinea Pigs (and all animals) are in tip-top shape before surgery, so their desexing had to be put on hold.
-
🔍 On examination, our vets picked up a crackling sound in both piggies’ lungs. After a course of antibiotics, a CT scan, and plenty of time to recover, they were finally back on the road to surgery.
-
Fast forward to now, both piggies have been successfully desexed by Dr Leanne and Nurse Tahlia, and given the all-clear at their post-op check with Nurse Alice. 🎉 They’re now recovering beautifully!
-
💡 Did you know?
-
Male Guinea Pigs can be fertile as early as 4–6 weeks old.
Females are fertile from around 9–10 weeks.
Even after desexing, males can still impregnate females for up to 2–6 weeks!
-
This is just one of the many reasons why desexing is such an important part of Guinea Pig care. 💛 -

🐰✨ “The hidden magic of rabbit tummies!”✨🐰
-
In this week’s Tiny Teachables, we’re uncovering the fascinating world of rabbit caecotrophs, because bunny digestion is smarter than it looks!
-
Caecotrophs are special nutrient-packed droppings that rabbits re-ingest to absorb vital vitamins and minerals. While it might sound unusual, this behaviour is completely natural (and essential!) for their health.

Our Story

The Rabbit Doctors are a team of dedicated Veterinarians and Nurses supported by a large referral hospital in the Melbourne Suburb of Collingwood. Drs Gerry Skinner, Lizzie Selby, Ruby Ivanov, Nicole Su, and Supanee Tan are supported by Rabbit Nurses Dee, Alanna, Claire, and Anthea Woodrow along with a fully equipped 24hour Referral and Intensive Care Hospital. This means we are able to provide around the clock care for your rabbit companions. The Rabbit Doctors are available for both primary and referral consultation at the Centre for Animal Referral and Emergency (CARE) in Collingwood business hours Monday to Friday and selected hours on Saturdays. Housecalls are available by request for vaccinations and general check-ups. All unwell bunnies need to come into the clinic in order for us to provide adequate care.
