“I enjoy connecting with people and helping where I can, to make a difference in their lives. I love to chat but I’m also a good listener.”

Sharon ensures that CPSN’s client activities schedules run smoothly, and they have the correct support worker matched with them to help them in their everyday tasks. Checking in with them regularly is also important, and Sharon provides them with the necessary tools and training for upskilling and furthering their qualifications. She is a fierce advocate for mental health and facilitates many of our Mental Health First Aid Training Sessions for our staff and support workers. Ingrid needed some extra support when she turned 18 – something that is not uncommon in the disability sector once young adults with Cerebral Palsy reach young adulthood. This stage of life has its own new set of unique life challenges.

Ingrid and her mum reached out to CPSN and we found a purposefully matched support worker to assist her with specific tasks that were crucial to her mental health and physical well-being. CPSN Staff & Clients recently visited Weribee’s Eagle stadium to participate in a day of wheelchair basketball facilitated by . We did some brief drills after getting used to the special wheelchairs & then played a friendly game.

It gave us all a special insight and extra appreciation of just how hard wheelchair athletes have to work on the basketball court!

We love hosting accessible community events like this for our community. Sign up to our newsletter to be the first to hear about what’s coming up.

Simone is a fiercely independent and proud wheelchair user. For Disability Pride Month, we are sharing Simone's story on how she breaks down the stigma of being a wheelchair user for children by making it less confronting.

“I don’t let my wheelchair define me. When I speak to younger children, I want them to not be afraid of the chair, to break down that physical barrier”

Our CPSN staff love sharing knowledge and information sharing with each other and our community. Our Marketing Officer, Alison, recently discovered a unique car parking hack or tip thats worth keeping in mind next time you go shopping to allow you a little extra room for easier entry and exits to your car, especially if accessible spaces are all occupied.

Look for a big pole or an area near a fire hydrant or hose area where you can add an extra few centimetres to your car’s surroundings.

✨ New look, same purpose.

For over 30 years, we’ve supported people with cerebral palsy and similar disabilities—and those who care for them. We’ve recently had a bit of a refresh—with a new look and a brand new website, but our focus hasn’t changed.

We’re here to provide trusted, personalised support (across Individual Support, Nursing Services and Independent Living). Led by lived experience. Built around your goals.

💻Our new site makes it easier to find support, access resources, and understand who we are and how we can help.

Last month we said “Farewell, see you soon, but not goodbye” to our wonderful People & Culture partner Debbie! Deb has been an instrumental member of CPSN and the P&C Department since late 2020. As our CEO Kellie says: “It’s never Goodbye, just see you later.” and we wish her the very best in whatever the future brings you!

We are fortunate that Deb will remain on our Human Rights Committee, helping to drive meaningful topics and change for people with CP. Read more about our interview with Debbie at https://www.cpsn.org.au/blog-news/article/behind-cpsn-with-debbie-meet-our-people-culture-partner

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

This year’s theme – Bridging Now to Next - reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. Bridging Now to Next calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.
