ABOUT YOUR OSTEOPATH:
Dr. Sofie Kotsakidis has completed 5 years of full time study and has received her Master’s degree in Osteopathy. She has also completed a neuromuscular dry needling course and a cupping course for musculoskeletal conditions. Dr. Kotsakidis enjoys treating a broad range of conditions, and uses a wide variety of techniques, which are tailored to each individual patient. She applies the Osteopathic principles to each patient - treating the body as a complete unit, in other words she treats the area of pain, but also looks for other patterns in the body that may be sore due to compensation; She will thoroughly address any underlying causes to prevent re-occurrence of the injury. Dr. Kotsakidis is registered with the Australian Heath Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and is an accredited member of the Australian Osteopathic Association (AOA). Your Osteopath is accredited to treat patients on Workcover, TAC and Department of Veterans Affairs. Moreland Osteopathy takes an individualised treatment approach to your health; we aim to educate you - the patient – to understand your condition, and to get you moving as quickly as possible, pain free, and returning to everyday activities. We often achieve this through biomechanical assessment, exercise prescription, treatment, lifestyle and ergonomic advice.

Let's talk scoliosis!

Do you have one?

Or perhaps know someone that suffers from a scoliosis? They're more common than you think!

This is a real case study that presented to our clinic and we'd love to take you through this case. (With full permission from the patient of course!)

A BIT OF HISTORY...
So this patient had presented to our clinic roughly 2 months ago with aches and pains that she thought were just her "usual" pains from work & stress.

Prior to seeing us, she had always, since a child, been to see other manual therapists who also treated her for her presenting complaint.

HOW DID WE DIAGNOSE HER?
Initially this person came in with pain around her right shoulder blade so we treated her for what we call "acute rib sprain," and this initial pain settled!

However we noticed that her mid back was still very "flat" & suspected something more as she kept getting recurring pains between her shoulder blades.

OUR NEXT STEP?
We send our patient off for an X-ray as things were not adding up, and she has now, after 33 years, been diagnosed with a scoliosis!

If you see Figure 2, the black line down the middle would be your ideal spine, however it goes off on tangents!

WHAT NOW?
Our patient is so relieved that we were able to diagnose her condition. As you could imagine living with a scoliosis and not knowing why you have so many aches and pains really played a detriment to her mental health.

She is now more educated on her condition and is seeing us for regular check ups. Alongside this we will give her a tailored exercise program to stretch & strengthen her spine.

If you know of anyone that needs assistance with their scoliosis or has recurring aches and pains that are just not making sense, please tag us and share!

HYOID STRETCH

🤸‍♀️Gently extend your head backwards, whilst keeping your jaw closed. Keep your tongue on the roof of your mouth.

🤸Hold for 30 seconds and release.

🤸‍♂️Stop immediately of you feel any dizziness or blurred vision.

🤸‍♀️This stretches the muscles around the front of your neck and throat.

WHY IS THIS STRETCH IMPORTANT?

We always think about the back and sides of the neck needing a "good stretch" however we tend to forget about the front. If the front is left neglected it can cause forward head carriage and all sorts of headaches and neck pain arise!

Do this stretch 2 times a day, particularly if you work at a desk.

For more help and advice please call us at the clinic 9386 4780, or make an appointment online.
