How much exercise do we need? Our physios have the answer. 💪
The Australian Government developed the national exercise guidelines to stipulate how much and what type of exercise is required to maintain a healthy life. The guidelines suggest a healthy person aged 18-64 accumulating 150 to 300 minutes of “moderate-intensity” physical activities, or 75 to 150 minutes of “vigorous-intensity” exercise, per week.
The guidelines also recommended muscle-strengthening exercises at least 2 days each week.
This means every week, we should be doing:
2.5 hour to 5 hours of moderate activities; or
1 hour and 15 minutes to 2.5 hours of vigorous-intensity exercise.
In fact, this is the minimum recommended amount of exercise, ideally, you would want to do more than this amount.
For other age groups or people with health conditions, different guidelines do apply.
Check in with one of our amazing physios for more information or exercise ideas.
Better yet, why not try one of our pilate classes. See our website for more information.

Is dry needling the same as Chinese acupuncture?
No, they are different. 😮
In dry needling, we focus more on the relaxation and twitching of muscles. Its theory is based on the needling directly passing through the muscle fibres to release tender spots and restore muscle fibre lengths. It is very effective as you could feel differences within 2-3 minutes.
All physiotherapists at Lion Rocker Physio can perform dry needling as part of our comprehensive treatment and management.
Although we do apply the same type of acupuncture needles in dry needling and acupuncture, both of the concepts and theories are very different. Chinese Medicine is based on a main concept of Yin and Yang, with the needling applications in different body locations to achieve body system equilibrium.
One of our physiotherapists, Ronald, is completing further study into acupuncture. He is very keen into integrating Traditional Chinese Medicine application into his physiotherapy practices.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fascia is a structure running from your heel and spreads into each toe muscle. It transfers stored energy from the Achilles tendon and allows smooth and fast propelling force, ie. when we are walking or running. It also plays part of the role of shock absorption in weight bearing tasks.

Patients usually complain of heel pain, big toe tenderness, tightness or pulling whilst walking, possible burning sensation running from heel to base of big toe after a long period of walking.

Common management procedures include either referring patients to physiotherapist. Treatment can also include:

- Shockwave

- Rocktape

- Dry needling

- Change of footwear

- Assessment of optimal foot arch

- Therapeutic ultrasound

However, another frequent differential diagnosis is, referring to leg pattern from a chronic or known lower back pain.

The heel and big toe are innervated by L5-S1 nerve root. As a result, if there is any increase of lower back joint stiffness or tenderness, it could potentially present similar symptoms as plantar fasciitis. In those circumstances, we can test with nerve glide assessment to confirm.

Therefore, at Lion Rocker Physio + Pilates Cockburn, we strive to assess thoroughly in our initial appointment to diagnose appropriately.

If required, we will also refer patients for imaging to confirm diagnosis and the degree of inflammation of plantar fascia, so we can tailor the most suited treatment plan for our patients.

Afterwards, we will be constantly reviewing patients’ responses to ensure symptoms are properly treated.

Postpone your worry?

Worry can happen at anytime/any places and we are not aware of the triggers. One of the strategies for us to be less distracted by our worry is to postpone our worries.

1. Choose a time to worry such as showering time.
2. Write down your worries on a paper/notebook and try to focus on the present.
3. Reflect on your worries which are written down earlier ago.

Learning this skill takes time to develop, but with more you practise, the better sense of control with your worries.

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition, which is caused by theaccumulative lymphatic fluid in the body system. Commonpresentation will be causing swelling in the arm or legs or other bodyparts. In severe cases, these can lead to skin and tissue changes, feeling heaviness in limbs, or even difficult to fit in clothing due tochange in sizes.

There are different stages of lymphoedema, ranging between stage1-4. Stages are differentiated by their degree of swelling in the bodyparts. They also refer to the extent of fibrosis formation of thelymphatic vessels.

There are different manual techniques or adjuncts that our physios utilise in the clinics to facilitate optimal lymphoedema management.

This includes manual lymphatic drainage technique, taping/ compression therapy or ultrasound therapy, to assist alternative lymphatic territories circulation.

After that, a home exercise program is essential, which encourages clients to perform regular stretching/ mobility exercises. These will all help in facilitating fluid circulation and prevent uncontrolled swelling.

What is sensory retraining?

It is a cognitive behavioural therapy, it helps restore your brain's ability/retrain and stimulate your sensory pathways to interpret your senses. For instance, people who experienced stroke would improve their sensorimotor function.

* Sensorimotor: the process of receiving sensory message from the environment and producing a motor response.

Our occupational therapist provides sensory retraining services.

Is it always good to take scans whenever I have pain in my joints or spinal joints?
No.
This is because it is common to see mismatches between scan results and subjective symptoms. There is usually a poor correlation. Therefore, we do not recommend going for a scan straight away whenever you experience pain in joints or back.
We do recommend seeing a physiotherapist to obtain professional advice!
At Nicholson Road/ Lion Rocker Physio, we are able to assess and determine whether you will benefit from further investigation with scans, whether be X-Ray or ultrasound or MRI scan.
In most circumstances, we only refer for scans if there are no improvements with continuous conservative management or increasing neurological symptoms.
If you are unsure, book yourself online today to find out more from our physiotherapists!
