An incredibly common (and sneaky) symptom of Itโ€™s often not until a practitioner like myself investigates further โ€” palpating and massaging key areas of the scalp and face โ€” that we uncover the tension and habit patterns contributing to the issue. For clients presenting like this, I often recommend a check-in with their dentist. Ongoing clenching or grinding can lead to tooth damage, and a night splint might be necessary for prevention.

In this case, my client came in with a lingering headache and noticeable tenderness in her left temporalis muscle. We used a combination of local ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ to release the local tension, while also including distal acupuncture points to support her underlying health patterns.

Headaches arenโ€™t always just about the head โ€” often, theyโ€™re a reflection of deeper patterns in the body ๐ŸŒ€

SKIPPING MEALS ๐ŸŽ

This has unfortunately been a real theme in clinic this week:

Life gets busy
There arenโ€™t enough hours in the day
Work has a deadline
Stress has dampened your appetite; or
The kids are just being clingy

Especially parents - we are always putting the needs of others first, and before you know it youโ€™re out the door without breakfast yet again.

I get it. Iโ€™ve been there ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

But (sometimes) any food is better than no food.

Eat a piece of fruit
Eat a carrot
Eat a boiled egg
Eat a piece of toast
Eat some crackers
Eat

Of course we want to aim for balanced and nutrient dense meals. But somethings you just need to grab something on the go.

Today, I almost went without lunch. I got so caught up in work stuff that I simply forgot. I didnโ€™t feel like anything, but instead just chucked some stuff I had in the fridge in a bowl and ate it.

If you havenโ€™t had lunch yet - this is your reminder to not skip your meals ๐Ÿ˜‰

My Acupuncture Tool Kit โœจ

Every acupuncturist has their own way of practicing, and I (Laura) love taking a multi-modality approach to treatment. Here are just a few of my favourite tools:

๐ŸŒŸ๐—”๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€ - The staple of any acupuncturist, available in various sizes, lengths, and widths.
To release muscle tension, alleviate pain, and boost circulation.
Perfect for more delicate areas, like the face. Great for sinus drainage and facial rejuvenation!
๐ŸŒŸ๐—š๐˜‚๐—ฎ ๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ฎ ๐—ง๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น๐˜€ - I use a jade heart for the face and a soup spoon for larger muscle groups like the neck, shoulders, and back. Both help release tension and improve blood flow.
๐ŸŒŸ๐—š๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฑ-๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐˜€ - These tiny but powerful seeds help extend the effects of treatment, great for managing stress, anxiety, chronic pain, and even preparing for birth.
A gentle heat therapy that nourishes yang qi, supports blood circulation, and warms specific areas of the body.
๐ŸŒŸ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ - This liniment creates a fiery sensation that soothes sore muscles and improves circulation. Itโ€™s ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ, but in the best way!
I use it after soft-tissue work to minimise tenderness and help muscles recover.
๐ŸŒŸ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ธ-๐—ข๐—ป ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€ - Tiny needles that you can leave in for up to 2-3 days! These are great for prolonging the benefits of your treatment at home. I often use these on expecting mums with severe morning sickness.

Each tool has its unique benefits, and when combined, they work synergistically to restore balance & promote your bodyโ€™s natural healing processes ๐Ÿ’ซ

C-SECTION SCAR RELEASE โœจ

This lovely client is 6 months postpartum and suffering from discomfort and pain in and around her c-section scar, as well as a โ€˜pullingโ€™ feeling on certain movements.

We applied massage, cupping, local needling with infrared heat lamp therapy and body acupuncture known to tonify qi and blood and aid in healing. Our aim is to increase blood circulation and breakdown adhesions to allow her scar to move more freely ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

Last month the most recent Mothers and Babies Report was published and it gives us a statistical understanding of pregnancy, labour, and birth in Australia, state by state. It also details maternal and infant outcomes and provides an overall picture of how Australian mothers are birthing their babies.

Why is this important?

Well, if youโ€™re birthing in the hospital system (97% of women are), itโ€™s helpful to understand what is happening on the labour ward. If youโ€™re currently pregnant, hereโ€™s some numbers that may be helpful as you prepare for birth:

If youโ€™re birthing for the first time, the chance of you having a caesarean has increased steadily over the past decade which means that 41% of first time mums have caesarean births.

And if youโ€™re over 35 the caesarean birth rate is 49%.

While the induction rate plateaued in 2020, only 30% of women laboured without drugs to start or speed up labour.

This means that if youโ€™re planning a physiological birth, you need to be prepared. And preparation is just as important for your birth support person. Learn everything you need to know in .birth.class

The pregnancy cushion๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿ’†๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

My firm and fold pregnancy cushion allows expecting mums to lay facedown to comfortably receive acupuncture, massage and cupping on the back of the body.

It is not uncommon for me to return to the treatment room to an exhausted pregnant mumma in a deep sleep after receiving massage and then acupuncture - itโ€™s that comfortable ๐Ÿฅฐ

The set up pictured here is a shallow set up, suitable for the first and early stages of the second trimester. Not all women need the pregnancy cushion in the first trimester, only those who find it uncomfortable laying on their front. As bump grows, I adjust the cushion accordingly to allow for a deeper set up that can take women into their third trimester. Sometimes I continue using the pregnancy cushion during the early stages of the postpartum period while bumps take time to shrink down, c-section scars heal or while breastfeeding b***s are just sore! Itโ€™s a really versatile treatment aid that I use most days in the clinic โœจโœŒ๐Ÿผ
