I'm a qualified clinical naturopath with over 20 years experience studying and working in natural medicine and nutrition. Why do so many people crave salty crisps or even Vegemite on toast during a migraine attack?

It’s not strange. It’s actually a clue.

Salt and hydration play a bigger role in migraine than most people realise. Your brain relies on steady electrolytes to keep nerve signalling stable. When that balance shifts, your migraine threshold can tip… and your body sometimes shouts for salt.

I’ve just written a new article on the surprising salt–migraine connection, including:
• why salty cravings happen
• the hydration mistakes that can make migraine worse
• my simple salt and water protocol I’ve used with clients for years
• how to tell if this approach might help you
• when to be cautious

If migraine is part of your life (or someone you love), this one’s worth a read.

Living with migraine can lead to a cycle of burnout that's easy to fall into. After recovering from a bout of migraine attacks, we may start to feel better and take on tasks that we couldn't handle before due to a lack of energy.

The problem is that because we might want to make up for lost time, we take on --too much-- and end up overcommitting ourselves. (I've definitely been there!)

The result? We feel depleted, stressed, and burned out, resulting in…another migraine attack. 😢

If you find yourself in this cycle, there are things we can explore to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. I completely understand that seeking support can be overwhelming, but with the right natural health approach and a strong commitment to the process, you can escape this cycle and become more resilient to ongoing migraine attacks.

I’m here if you would like support.

Have you noticed your migraine episodes feel different lately, or are new hormonal symptoms creeping in that you can’t quite explain?

For many women, perimenopause brings hormonal shifts that can intensify migraine, change how symptoms show up, or trigger other challenges like sleep disruption, mood swings and energy dips.

These changes are real. They’re not “all in your head,” and they’re not something you have to just put up with 🌿

A naturopathic approach looks at the whole picture. That means understanding your hormonal patterns, nervous system regulation, nutrition, stress responses and emotional landscape. When these pieces are addressed together, women often find steadier ground and fewer disruptive symptoms over time ✨

If this sounds familiar, you might like to read my latest article on how migraine can change during perimenopause, and what support can look like in this stage of life.

🌸 World Menopause Month is here, and it’s the perfect time to shine a light on a connection that often goes unspoken: menopause and migraine.

As oestrogen levels fluctuate during perimenopause and menopause, migraine flare-ups can become more frequent, more intense, and harder to predict. Add hot flushes, sleep disruption, and stress to the mix, and it’s no wonder many women feel like their bodies are working against them.

The truth is, migraine in menopause isn’t just “another symptom”. It’s a whole-body experience that deserves proper attention and care.

As a naturopath, I help women untangle the complex web of hormones, nervous system changes, and lifestyle factors that can influence migraine. It’s not about one-size-fits-all solutions - it’s about being seen, heard, and supported with a plan that makes sense for your unique journey.

✨ This World Menopause Month, remember: you don’t have to navigate migraine and menopause alone.

When a migraine hits, the last thing you want to do is rummage through cupboards or dash to the chemist. Over the years, I’ve found a handful of simple things that really help, so I’ve pulled them together into one kit.

Here’s what I keep on hand:
🛁 Kunzea Bath Salts - for easing tight muscles and helping the whole body relax.
🍵 Pukka Three Ginger Tea - gentle on the stomach and useful for migraine-related nausea.
✨ Magnesium Oil - rubbed into a sore neck or the soles of your feet before bed to improve sleep.
🍵 Maple Matcha Powder - a steady energy lift without the caffeine crash.
🌿 Lavender Oil (or peppermint if you prefer) - lovely for calming, or when nausea/brain fog creeps in.
💧 Hydration Salts - keeping on top of electrolytes makes a big difference in migraine prevention and recovery.

I’ve set these products up in one place so you don’t need to go hunting. You’ll just need to create a free Vital.ly account to access them. Order one, or order them all!

Because making life a little easier when migraine shows up is half the battle.

Much love,

During a recent meditation, I had one of those quiet moments of clarity, the kind that slips in when your mind is still. I realised that so much of migraine life is about tracking the problem. We jot down triggers, chart symptoms, note the days lost to pain. While that information is useful and I often ask my clients to do this, it can also keep our focus on the very thing we’d like less of.

In gratitude practice, there’s a saying: what you focus on grows. So, what if we flipped it?

Instead of counting migraine attacks, let’s start celebrating migraine-free days.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. You might:
- Put a simple ✅ or 🌸 on your calendar.
- Use the notes app on your phone and drop in a quick emoji.
- Write a line or two about what you were able to do that day, something that might have felt impossible during a migraine episode.

Maybe you took a morning walk without worrying about glare. Or enjoyed dinner with friends without that familiar throb creeping in. Perhaps you worked a full day, or simply had the energy to read a chapter before bed.

Over time, this little habit can shift the balance. You start noticing not just the absence of pain, but the presence of joy, connection, and energy.

It’s not about glossing over the hard days. It’s about letting yourself see and appreciate the good ones.

So here’s my gentle challenge to you: for the next month, track your migraine-free days. Notice how they feel. Celebrate them in small ways. You might be surprised at how much there is to record.

Migraine is a complex condition, with a lot going on. The guidance of a naturopathic health practitioner is really valuable to help those living with migraine break out of the cycle. I've seen for myself how life-changing naturopathic treatment can be in reducing the frequency of migraine attacks.

As a naturopathic practitioner, I start with your health history, diet and lifestyle while looking at further lab testing to determine what the underlying drivers of migraine attacks could be. Then I will look at addressing any hormonal imbalance, stress or trauma, liver function, musculoskeletal, digestive problems, nutrient deficiency or food intolerances which may be contributing to your migraine condition. Many of these issues are interrelated, and we help correct any imbalance through good food, herbal medicine, practitioner-quality supplements and lifestyle changes.

A series of sessions with a naturopath, combined with your own determination, can help you break out of the migraine cycle.

Reach out when you are ready, I'm here to help.

If you’ve ever felt stuck between pain meds that don’t work and toughing it out during a migraine attack, this new research might be worth a look.

A small device called the Mi-Helper is showing early promise for migraine relief by delivering room-temperature, dry air into the nose. It targets a nerve cluster thought to play a big role in migraine pain. No drugs, no injections, just gentle airflow through the nostrils.

In a recent trial, nearly half of the participants using the highest airflow rate were pain-free two hours after using the device. Most reported some level of relief, and the side effects were minimal (a bit of nasal irritation or pressure, but nothing major).

This isn't available just yet, but it could become a helpful option, especially for those who don’t tolerate medication well or are looking for something to use early in a migraine flare-up.

It's not a cure, but it’s hopeful. And sometimes, a little hope can go a long way. 🤞
