Winter has officially arrived… and it is time to create “Kick-a-Germ Juice!”

This warming naturopathic tonic has become a winter favourite in many households for good reason. Packed with traditional ingredients such as lemon, garlic, ginger, cloves, rosemary, chilli and raw honey, it’s designed to gently warm the body and support you through cold and flu season.

Many of these ingredients have been traditionally valued for their antimicrobial, immune-supportive and circulation-enhancing qualities — while also helping to clear congestion and warm the system during the colder months.

Our favourite way to enjoy it?

Simmer gently on the stove, wrap your hands around a warm mug, and allow yourself to slow down for a moment.

Kick-a-Germ Juice Recipe

Ingredients: 1/2 lemon, sliced (skin on if organic) 1–2 cloves garlic, crushed or minced 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated 1/2 tsp fresh chilli 1 tsp cloves 1 sprig rosemary or thyme 3 cups water 1–2 tsp Manuka or raw local honey Pinch of cayenne pepper

Method:
Place all ingredients except honey and cayenne into a saucepan.

Bring to the boil, then cover and simmer gently for 15–30 minutes.

Strain into a mug, stir through the honey and cayenne, and sip warm throughout the day.

I just had a flick through this recipe book, and it has some delish looking recipes, you don’t need to be on a Low FODMAP diet to enjoy these. Definitely a lot of foodspo!

FODMAPs are a group of fermentable carbohydrates that can cause digestive discomfort for some people such as bloating, gas and pain. You may react to all or just some. While being on a low FODMAP diet can reduce these symptoms, it’s always a good idea to find out why, you are reacting to these foods in the first place, and the goal is always to introduce these foods gradually( as a lot of them are great for gut microbiome diversity, and contain vital nutrients).

But in the meantime being on a low Fodmap diet ( especially if you had SIBO or IBS), can give your tummy a rest, while you work on finding out why your gut is reacting, and potentially working on gut healing. ❤️‍🩹

This is where working alongside a naturopath or herbalist can be really helpful!
