TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure
It’s the amount of energy (calories) you burn from all activity: exercise, eating, doing housework, even breathing and sleeping.
Think of TDEE like a bucket of water with a hole in it. The water leaking out is your TDEE (activity).
Conversely, put a hose in the top and turn it on, and that’s your energy intake (food).
You’ve probably already figured it out.
If the water is leaking out faster than the hose is filling your metaphorical bucket, your TDEE is greater than your energy intake. That’s the magic “calorie deficit” you may have heard of.
A calorie deficit simply means you are burning more calories than you are eating.
What happens then?
You lose weight 🥳
So to ensure a calorie deficit you can:
a. eat less (turn the hose down)
b. move more (bigger hole in bucket)
c. do both (preferable)
But...
Some people say hormones, thyroid, medication etc. means a calorie deficit won’t work.
They are wrong (really just frustrated).
Here’s why...
In these types of scenarios, TDEE can be lower, meaning that getting into that magical calorie deficit is harder. Not impossible, just harder.
