A breast self-exam is a simple technique to check for changes in your breasts, helping detect lumps or other abnormalities early. Here’s how to do a breast self-exam:
1. In Front of a Mirror
• Step 1: Stand with your arms at your sides, and look for any visible changes in the size, shape, or contour of your breasts. Check for swelling, dimpling, or changes in the skin or ni***es (such as inversion or discharge).
• Step 2: Raise your arms above your head and look for the same changes.
• Step 3: Place your hands on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Look for any abnormalities in breast appearance while doing this.
2. In the Shower
• Step 4: While standing, raise one arm behind your head. With the other hand, use the pads of your fingers to feel your breast in circular motions.
• Start at the outer part of the breast and move towards the center, covering the entire breast and armpit area.
• Use different levels of pressure: light, medium, and firm to feel all layers of breast tissue.
• Repeat on the other breast.
3. Lying Down
• Step 5: Lie down on your back, placing a pillow or towel under one shoulder.
• Step 6: Raise the arm on that side above your head. With the opposite hand, use the same circular motions, covering the entire breast and armpit area.
• Step 7: Repeat for the other breast.
What to Look For:
• Lumps, hard knots, or thickening
• Swelling, warmth, or redness
• Changes in ni**le appearance, such as inversion or discharge
• Changes in skin texture, like dimpling or puckering
