What is High Intensity Support under the NDIS?
“High intensity support” refers to high intensity daily personal activities (HIDPA) — that is, very complex, high-risk personal care supports that require specialised skills and knowledge to deliver safely.

These supports are considered “high intensity” because they often involve:

- Medical or health-adjacent procedures (e.g. catheter care, ventilator management, tracheostomy, complex wound care, enteral feeding)
- High risk, highly personal, or invasive assistance (e.g. significant clinical oversight, monitoring, emergency response)
- A need for staff to have advanced training, supervision, and strict adherence to a participant’s support plan

The NDIS publishes skills descriptors that outline the specific skills, behaviours, knowledge, training and supervision that providers must ensure their workers have when delivering high intensity supports.
