When little ones hear about violent events on the news, it can be hard to help them understand and cope with what happened. Limiting media exposure and making space for them to express big feelings can help children feel safer and more secure.

Managing big feelings? Here's one for the parents.
I am lost for words, as many are, so here is a quick guide that roots in the principles of trauma informed care.
--> Collaborate and involve them in age-appropriate ways.
--> Social connection is protective. Healing is relational.
--> Transparent decision making. Don't push their fears down but acknowledge and empower them to make decisions right now. They may choose to stay home to regulate. They may want to be dropped off rather than take public transport. Talk about ways of building safety in.
--> Support the nervous system. Ground where you can. Play is a beautiful way of doing this.
--> Recognise the impact of trauma, and in this case, working through using Jewish ways of being may provide an additional layer of protection.
Sending love to the Jewish community, as we stand firmly against anti-Semitism and any act of violence.

RECONNECT
Reach out to someone you haven’t talked to in a while.
We all benefit when we reach out with kindness and genuine friendship, especially when it is with someone we haven't talked to in a while. I am encouraged when someone I haven't spoken to in a while reaches out whether with a text, phone call or catching up at an event. It is interesting to read a 2022 study, ā€œThe Surprise of Reaching Out: Appreciated More Than We Think,ā€ asked college students to write a short note and share a gift with someone they hadn’t spoken to in a while. They then predicted how much the responder would appreciate the act. Responders later rated how much they actually appreciated it, and the results indicated that people underestimated how much others appreciated it when they reached out. These findings held even when people reached out to weak ties—people they didn’t know too well.
