Did you know… the way you breathe directly affects the state of your ANS??

Firstly, let’s have a brief chat about the ANS, I will delve much deeper into this in the next post, but just as a quick introduction, the ANS or the Autonomic Nervous System is the the part of the nervous system that involves all your unconscious functions like breathing, heart rate, digestion, blood pressure etc. It is made up of the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) or your fight or flight / stress response, and your Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) which is your rest, digest, repair and reproduce response and a healthy balance between these two systems is paramount for maintaining optimal mental and physical health and wellbeing.

Dysfunctional breathing often involves shallow, rapid, upper chest, mouth breathing which creates a whole bunch of issues on a metabolic level (will also discuss these in another post), and sends a direct signal to the brain that you are not safe, which triggers the production and release of cortisol and adrenaline from the Adrenal glands to put you into your SNS or fight / flight/ stress response.

Functional breathing, in and out through the nose and deep down into your diaphragm stimulates the vagus nerve, which signals to the brain that you are safe and enables you to enter your PNS or your rest and repair response.

There are many functional breathing exercises you can do throughout the day to self regulate your ANS and down regulate the SNS or stress response to calm your nervous system. I find even just bringing awareness to your breath, checking in with where and how breathing and shifting into a habit of consistently breathing through the nose and down into the diaphragm is a great first step in self regulation, especially in times of stress and anxiety.

In my acupuncture clinic I often see a direct correlation between dysfunctional breathing and anxiety, depression, PTSD, insomnia, and chronic illness. Addressing and treating these conditions is always a multifaceted process, and incorporating functional breathing training is an absolute game changer! 🌸

Trust your Breath…

The thing I love most about freediving (other than the free fall) is the trust in your breath and the calmness of your mind. The sense of peace and freedom I feel freediving compares to nothing else I’ve ever experienced 🤍

The biggest challenge I’ve found when diving to 30+ mts (and back) on one breath, is not how far you can push yourself, but how clear and calm you can stay in your mind and body. You can’t overthink it, you can’t push it or control it, and you definitely can’t force it, you just have to completely let go and surrender to the ocean. It’s like a deep meditation. I can’t wait to go even deeper!

Preparing for each dive is all about your mental space.. Looking down the length of the line and not being able to see the bottom plate can be either exhilarating or intimidating, depending solely on your thoughts and mental state in the moment. The breathe up is a crucial time to release all tension in the mind and body, focusing on the breath, relaxing every muscle, and emptying your mind of all thoughts. Then one deep breath in, and start the descent.

When you hit the free fall from around 15 meters or so (when you become negatively buoyant and basically just fall), the feeling is so exquisite! It’s like floating in space and being drawn into the depths of the ocean at the same time. It just makes you want to go deeper, deeper, and deeper! Then, when you turn to come up and start swimming against your weight, the challenge to stay calm reaches its peak! This is where the urge to breathe really hits, the diaphragm can start to contract, and you have to remind your body and your mind to stay relaxed, you have more than enough Oxygen, just relax and trust! Trust your body, trust your breath 🤍

Learning this through freediving has made me realise how life’s challenges are just the same. The more we stress and try to control things, the more tension we create in ourselves and the situation, and the more uncomfortable it feels. But when we release all control and just breathe, trust, and let go, things always seem to just fall into place…

Did you know.. many Asian cultures consider food to be medicine, and equally as important for maintaining optimal health as the herbal remedies prescribed by their traditional doctors.. In Chinese and Japanese dietetics, there is often crossover between food and medicinal herbs in the preparation of their daily meals, with food commonly being valued for it’s energetic properties, and flavours, correlating with the acupuncture meridians and associated functionality of the organs.

The 5 energies are seen as
🌸Cold to cool = yin
🌸Neutral = balance of yin and yang
🌸Warm to Hot = Yang

And the 5 flavours are
🌸Pungent = Lung / Large Intestine
🌸Sweet = Stomach and Spleen
🌸Sour = Liver / Gallbladder
🌸Bitter = Heart/ Small intestine
🌸Salty = Kidney / Bladder

Some basic dietetic guidelines you can easily follow on a daily basis without delving too deeply into the nitty gritty of it all, is to have mostly cooked foods, warm in temperature, and more neutral in flavour. These foods will promote healthy functionality of the stomach and spleen, which is the starting point for the transformation and transportation of food Qi. Healthy Earth element Qi (Stomach and Spleen) is essential for maintaining optimal energy levels and focus throughout the day. Overconsumption of cold raw foods (salads, raw veg, smoothies, sugary foods etc) can injure the stomach and spleen, and over time leave you feeling depleted and weak.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about the medicinal properties of food, please feel free to contact Dr Tahnee Burchmann in clinic (link in bio).

Stress / anxiety is one of the most common symptoms I treat in clinic. Our faced paced modern day lives are loaded with busy schedules, multitasking, and adrenal overload! From the moment our feet hit the floor in the morning we seem to rushing about, always on the go go go! Whilst some of this is unavoidable, we can ensure we make time to switch off and allow our nervous systems time to ‘rest and repair’.

Japanese acupuncture is highly effective for switching off the sympathetic (our fight/ flight, or stress response), and putting you into your parasympathetic (our rest, digest, repair response). In my clinical practices this is always the starting point of every treatment, allowing the system to go into deep repair mode, and, due to the phenomenal process of Neuroplasticity this can have lasting effects throughout our daily lives, continuing well after the acupuncture session 🌸

Outside of the acupuncture clinic, a daily practice I can’t live without is meditation!! I’ve found for me, the most effective practice is Transcendental Meditation, but any style that resonates with you is super beneficial for helping to calm your nervous system. Whether it’s a guided meditation at home, yoga, or simply sitting under a tree or on the beach, just taking a few minutes to switch off everyday will help to reset your nervous system. I always recommend at least 20 minutes before bed to switch off the sympathic at the end of the day and allow your body to more deeply go into your parasympathetic for a better nights sleep and repair, but whatever time you can make, whenever you can, will still have amazing effects on your nervous system.

These two simple practices can have a multitude of health benefits like improved sleep, regulation of blood pressure, reduced anxiety, improved digestion and absorption of nutrients from food, increased immune system, and many many more!

If you have any questions or want to know more, please feel free to contact me (Dr Tahnee Burchmann) in clinic (link in bio) 🌸

Acupuncture during pregnancy is widely practiced for supporting mums and bubs throughout the first to third trimesters… But the importance of continuing treatments into the fourth trimester is often overlooked. Postpartum acupuncture is hugely beneficial for supporting mums and their beautiful new bubs throughout the first weeks post birth.

Acupuncture for postpartum care may:

🌸Help to reduce feelings of overwhelm by calming the nervous system

🌸Help to support milk production by nourishing blood, and Qi

🌸Balance hormones by regulating the endocrine system via the pituitary gland

🌸Repair and revitalise the whole system by harmonising imbalances, and nourishing depletion

Did you know acupuncture has been around for over 3000 years??

🌸Bone etchings estimated to be from 1600bc contain the oldest known records of ancient Chinese Medicine.

🌸Documents discovered in China dating back to 189 BC detail Chinese Medicine Meridian systems, and statues of the ‘Bronze Man’ dating to back to 1026-1027 depict acupuncture points and meridians that are still used clinically today!

There are some differences between modern Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the style of Japanese acupuncture we practice at Kishi Acupuncture. You can read about this and much more on www.kishiacupuncture.com (link in bio) or contact Dr Tahnee Burchmann via the link in the bio if you have any questions on how acupuncture may help you!

The Pituitary Gland is a small pea sized gland that sits at the base of the brain and is essentially considered to be the ‘control tower’ of the endocrine system. It plays an integral role in fertility, menstruation, menopause and many other hormonal systems like thyroid function and even Blood Sugar regulation in Diabetes.

An imbalanced pituitary gland can lead to a multitude of hormonal disfunctions, including irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, thyroid issues, weight gain, brain fog, lack of libido, and those frustrating menopausal symptoms, amongst many other possible conditions. Disharmony of pituitary gland function can even lead to disfunction of the immune system!!

How does your pituitary become imbalanced you may ask? There are various causes of what we refer to as a pituitary gland imbalance, some common patterns I have seen in clinic are, rapid fluctuations in hormonal levels (ie, birth control/ morning after pill), chronic- long term sinus infections, physical trauma to the face or head, and you guessed it! our good old friend STRESS!

Constant ongoing stress can wreak havoc on the pituitary gland and endocrine system via the Hypothalamic- Pituitary- Adrenal Axis stress response, which I will delve deeper into with you in another post so stay tuned..

A few ways you can improve the health and functionality of your pituitary gland are, maintaining a balanced and healthy diet high in whole foods/green leafy veggies/ protein and low in sugar and processed foods, lowering your stress levels through meditation/ yoga/ gentle exercise etc, healthy sleep routines/ circadian cycles, and regular acupuncture.

Please feel free to get in touch for a chat if you’d like to know more about how acupuncture can help you 🌸

Period pain and menstrual irregularities are common disharmonies that are often seen in the acupuncture clinic. In western society today, we have come to accept abnormal periods as the norm, but have you ever considered that it is possible to have an easy, pain free, and no stress regular cycle? 🌸🌸🌸

Some of the conditions we see at Kishi Acupuncture are:

🌸Menstrual Migraines (may present at ovulation as well)
🌸Menstrual Nausea and / or vomiting (or diarrhea / constipation)
🌸Menorrhagia (heavy or excessive bleeding)
🌸Amenorrhea (absence of a period)
🌸Polymenorrhea (frequent periods- less than 21 day cycles)
🌸Oligomenorrhea (prolonged cycles greater than 35 days)
🌸Metrorrhagia (abnormal bleeding, or bleeding between cycles)
🌸Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
🌸Long or Short menstrual bleeding
🌸PCOS & Endometriosis
🌸PMS pain and mood swings
🌸Hormonal Acne

A healthy menstrual cycle should be between 27-29 days, with no pain or PMS, a moderate flow (not too heavy or too light) and a healthy red colour (not brown or pink and not clots), with a 3 to 5 day bleed and no spotting either side. Japanese acupuncture for menstrual irregularities may assist in this by identifying and treating the core pattern of disharmony, and repairing and maintaining the functionality of the whole system.

The same menstrual disharmony can have a completely different underlying cause from person to person. Kiiko Style Japanese Acupuncture uses a thorough assessment of your presenting symptoms, pulse, and Hara (Japanese diagnostic technique using stomach palpation), to diagnose the source of the disharmony, and a personalised acupuncture prescription is applied using advanced techniques.

Please feel free to contact Dr Tahnee Burchmann if you have any questions about how acupuncture may help you 🌸

We all know it’s not great to be stressed right? And we’ve spoken a bit about the sympathetic nervous system, but how much do you know about the parasympathetic nervous system?

The parasympathetic Nervous system is our ‘Rest, Digest, and Repair’ response and is the counter balance for our sympathetic nervous system or our ‘fight or flight’ response.

In todays fast paced lifestyle, it’s easy to get stuck in our stress response. Simply being constantly under the pump keeps our sympathetic nervous system engaged, add in a stressful job / study, or relationship issues and the stress hormones are well and truly elevated! This throws our sympathetic / parasympathetic balance completely out of whack and impacts on our sleep / wake cycles (circadian rhythms), immune and endocrine systems and so on. The longer we exist stuck in our fight or flight pattern, the more readily our adrenal glands fire off cortisol and adrenaline, which in turn prevents the inhibiting neurotransmitter GABA from acting on GABA receptors (responsible for calming the stress response), and it becomes a constant cycle of stress / inability to switch off and relax, until we make some big changes, or completely burnout!

How can we regulate this response?
Multiple clinical trials suggest the efficacy of both acupuncture and meditation for switching off the sympathetic nervous system and engaging the parasympathetic. In clinic I see this regularly, and it’s so rewarding to help people who come in extremely stressed totally switch off and experience deep relaxation. Unfortunately, we can’t have acupuncture treatments every day of the week, but we can meditate daily!

Meditation works by calming the sympathetic nervous system and switching on the parasympathetic, allowing the activation of GABA which calms the brain, slowing brain waves down from our conscious functioning Beta, to deep relaxation Theta, and in turn calming the whole system. Due to the fascinating process of neuroplasticity, with daily meditation practices, we can more easily maintain a state of calm and be less reactive to stress throughout the day, even when under pressure! Sounds great huh!

Tahnee Burchmann Acupuncture

Hi, I’m Tahnee. I hold a Bachelor of Health Science in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and have a wealth of life experience and a passion for wholistic health. I have a background in Emergency Medical Response and have previously worked off-shore in W.A. on environmental research ships. It was during this experience that I found my passion for healing.

Throughout my studies and clinical practice, I have developed and maintained a regular client base, assisting my patients with various chronic disorders including mental/emotion issues (depression and anxiety), digestion and general well-being, musculoskeletal pain, and chronic fatigue/auto-immune disorders. I have a special interest in treating women’s health issues including menstrual, menopausal, fertility, post-partum disharmonies.

I believe health and healing is as much the patient’s journey as their practitioner’s. As a Japanese Acupuncture practitioner, I have witnessed the benefits of educating each person with knowledge of their specific conditions and treatments, as well as self-care advice and basic Chinese dietetics.

I am trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine and am continuously advancing my studies in Japanese acupuncture which looks at a deeper, more systemic/root cause and diagnosis to treat the underlying cause of the pathology in order to better achieve and maintain a healthy physiology of the whole body.
