When it comes to cancer, early detection is key and can save lives. ❤️
Screening can help detect cancer early, before symptoms show up and when they’re easiest to treat. It can also spot precancerous changes or infections that could lead to cancer later.
Whether it’s bowel, breast or cervical screenings, getting checked regularly gives you the best chance of finding cancer before it becomes harder to treat.
No screening test is 100% accurate and your body changes over time, so staying on top of your check-ups is crucial, even if you feel fine.
If you’re concerned about symptoms or know you’re at higher risk, speak to your GP at Maple Street Surgery, even if you’ve had a screening recently. 👩‍⚕️

A bit of huffy puffy (exercise) is noice, different and keeps your heart healthy. ❤️
Finding time to work on your physical fitness is one of the best things you can do for your heart and your overall health. By making your heart work a little harder, you can cut your risk of heart disease by 33%.
It can be as simple as doing everyday things like gardening, shopping and walking to more structured sports and activities. As long as you're moving regularly, darl, that's a good start.
It's recommended that adults:
💃 do 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity, five or more days per week
💪 be active on all or most days of the week, with some muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days each week.
Learn more about how some huffy puffy can benefit your heart health. 👇
If you've never exercised or you're not used to physical activity, we recommend that you check with your doctor before starting. Ask them for a heart health check to make sure you're in tip-top shape to start some power walking, Kath-and-Kel-style.

Ever woken up after a night of drinking feeling awful, and had your friends suggest: ‘How about a quick hair of the dog?’ 🍺
To be clear, we're not talking about attempting to cure a hangover with actual dog hair! ‘Hair of the dog’ refers to the idea that drinking more alcohol the morning after a big night can ease your hangover.
While that breakfast bloody mary or mimosa may seem like it's helping at first, in reality, it’s only delaying the time you experience symptoms, and your hangover may hit harder in the long run. 😖
Here are some ways to reduce hangover symptoms without more booze:
😴 Sleep at least 7 hours after drinking alcohol to help your body recover.
🍽 Eat a healthy breakfast to help stabilise your blood sugar levels; this can help reduce feelings of nausea.
🧊 Drink water and electrolytes to rehydrate your body.
❤ Be kind to yourself. Rest and let your body recover to restore your endorphins naturally.
The best way to avoid a hangover is to drink in moderation, drink water between each alcoholic drink, and know your limits.
Keep in mind that healthy adults should drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 standard drinks in a single day to reduce the risk of alcohol-related disease or injury.

So, you're ready to get pregnant? Here's what you should know.
Both parents play a vital role in a healthy pregnancy, and it all starts before conception—even before the s***m meets the egg. 💦🤝🥚
Making lifestyle changes 3 to 6 months before pregnancy can help:
👉 boost your fertility
👉 reduce problems during pregnancy
👉 assist in recovery from birth.
While making healthy lifestyle changes is important, you should also check with your doctor about your general health, family history, Sexually Transmissible Infection (STI) screenings, and other health checks.
Falling pregnant is not always straightforward or easy. If you need help or support, reach out to your partner or loved one, or your GP at Maple Street Surgery. 🤗

Which hat is your vibe? 🤠
Wearing a hat when you're outdoors can provide your skin with some protection... depending on what type you wear.
The best sun-protective hats shade the head, face, neck and ears. These hats include wide-brimmed or bucket, which are ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rated. 👒
UPF refers to how much of the head the hat protects and the material it's made from (that will block UV). The higher the rating, the more you're protected. Hats with a rating of UPF50 and UPF50+ are recommended.
When choosing a hat look at:
☀️ the quality of sun protection it offers
☀️ whether it is practical
☀️ safety
☀️ ventilation (for during physical activity or in warmer weather).
To reduce your risk of skin cancer, do the five s's whenever you're outside:
🧥 slip on protective clothing
🧴 slop on SPF50+ sunscreen
👒 slap on a broad-brimmed hat
⛱ seek shade
🕶 slide on close-fitting wrap-around sunglasses.

Lady Lamington may have inspired the delicious chocolatey, coconutty goodness that is the lamington — but that wasn't her only claim to fame. 🤩
Born Annabella Elizabeth Mary Houghton Hozier, she married the second Baron Lamington in June 1895, shortly before his appointment as Queensland’s eighth Governor in April 1896.
Lady Lamington quickly established a reputation as congenial and hard-working.
Shortly after her marriage, she opened a new cookery school at the Brisbane Technical College and became patron of the Braille Society. She was also instrumental in establishing the Lady Lamington Hospital for the Diseases of Women and the Lady Lamington Nurses’ Home at the Brisbane General Hospital. 🏥
The Lady Lamington Hospital was part of the Brisbane General Hospital precinct in Herston, where the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) is now. The Lady Lamington Nurses' Home was the social epicentre of life as a resident nurse at the RBWH. Generations of nurses lived here during their years of training. These buildings are the oldest surviving nurses’ quarters in Queensland.
Lady Lamington was so committed to her work that she trained with St John's as a nurse, and made time to volunteer at the general hospital. She did this all while raising her two children. After her time in Queensland, she served in the volunteer ambulance brigade in France during World War I. 🚑
In 1901, Lord and Lady Lamington left for Bombay, India where he served until 1907. On their retirement, the Lamingtons returned to Lanarkshire in Scotland. Lady Lamington died in 1944 at the age of 75, four years after her husband.
She is remembered as 'a most loveable woman'. 🥰

Scrolling in bed and can’t sleep? Your phone might be making it worse! 📱💤
We’re surrounded by blue light all day—sunlight, phones, TVs, computers, and even light bulbs all emit it. Chances are, you're reading this on a device that’s sending blue light right into your eyes. But how does that affect your sleep?
Your body can tell the difference between the intense blue light of bright daylight and the warmer, redder tones that signal the day is ending. As the light dims, it signals your body to release melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep. When you're exposed to blue light in the evening, your body doesn't release melatonin properly, which can disrupt your sleep. 😴
To minimise the impacts of blue light, try switching your device to 'night shift' mode with warmer tones. You can also use blue-light filtering screens on your devices, or glasses, if you're working late. When using devices that emit blue light, aim to take regular breaks every 20 minutes before you return to your up-close viewing.
Try to minimise your bedtime scroll—your eyes and body will thank you for the better night's sleep. 💙

Menopause isn't a 'one-size-fits-all' experience, and the subject of many myths!
Some people have symptoms that interfere with their daily lives, while others have none at all.
There are many ways to manage menopause and perimenopause symptoms, but finding a strategy that works for you may take time.
Some find it helpful to try:
🍎 Lifestyle changes: eating a healthy diet, staying hydrated, exercising, getting enough sleep, reducing alcohol intake and quitting smoking/vaping.
🧘 Practical tips: using a hand fan or water spray when hot, or relaxation classes like yoga or meditation.
💊 Therapies and medicines: menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), medication to reduce hot flushes and natural therapies.
Always consult with your doctor at Maple Street Surgery to find the best plan for managing your symptoms.
