OSTEOPOROSIS
Itโs world Osteoporosis Day!
Let talk a bit about bone health.
Osteoporosis is a common condition affecting 1.2 million Australians.
Itโs a condition where bones become fragile and brittle, which increases risk of fractures compared to normal bones. Good news is exercise can help!
Exercise can help to modify the shape and size of bones so that they become stronger and prevent injury. Exercise also helps build muscle strength and improve balance which can improve your confidence and reduce your risk of falls.
What type of exercise is best for osteoporosis?
- Weight bearing exercise increases strength of bones (think brisk walking, stair climbing).
- Start light and progressively increase
- Supervised resistance exercise (e.g lifting weights)
- Moderate intensity that does not exacerbate pain
- Balance training to prevent falls
Accredited Exercise Physiologists can help come up with a tailored, safe and effective plan and give you advice on how to manage your bone health!
