✨ Upside‑down writing for the win 🖊✨
We love seeing families engage with our recommendations at home when they can! And love it when the client is 'in the moment' and having sheer fun.
Today’s setup might look a little unusual… a child lying on his back under a table, drawing on paper taped above him. But from an Occupational Therapy lens, this is GOLD for building the foundations of confident handwriting.
When kids (or teens!) work on a vertical or overhead surface, their bodies naturally activate the big postural muscles around the shoulders, upper back, and core. These muscles create the stability needed for the smaller hand and finger muscles to do their job with control and endurance.
This position also:
⭐Strengthens the shoulder girdle, which is essential for steady pencil movements
⭐Encourages a more functional wrist position
⭐Boosts hand–eye coordination as the eyes track the pencil above
⭐Builds stamina for writing tasks
⭐Helps those with low muscle tone and high levels of fatigue be able to engage, without having to focus energy into supporting and stabilising their body to stay and sit upright
Working under the table isn’t just fun — it’s therapy in disguise.
Strong foundations = easier, more confident handwriting later on.
Sometimes the simplest setups are the most powerful 💪🌈
