It’s World Physio Day. The theme around the world is healthy ageing and falls prevention. It’s a good message for all ages; one of my patient’s father recently reminded me the time to plant a tree is yesterday. Early adoption of strategies is key to a healthy life.

I am really concerned about where physiotherapy will land in the new scheme transitioning Autistic children and children with developmental delay away from NDIS funding (due to start July 1 2026).
Whilst I am not opposed to a different method of funding and delivering services, I am concerned that physiotherapy will be excluded in Thriving Kids and also in any medicare based system required to provide one on one intervention with individuals. Physiotherapists are integral to treating children with autism and developmental delay. We are often the first to see a child who is not reaching motor milestones and we invariably assist children with autism to gain skills that assist them to move and play in a social and community setting.

The Federal government wants to remove children with so-called ‘mild to moderate’ developmental delay and autism from the NDIS.
