Did you know your digestion begins before you even take a bite? It’s true! This initial, crucial stage is called the cephalic phase of digestion. “Cephalic” simply means “of the head,” because this phase is all about your brain’s response to the sensory experience of food.

When you rush through your meals—eating in the car, in front of a screen, while standing—you bypass this phase and your body isn’t prepared to receive nourishment.

This is why you can eat a perfectly healthy meal and still feel bloated and gassy. It’s not just what you’re eating, it’s how you’re eating.

The antidote? Presence. The simple act of slowing down.

Swipe to the end to see the one thing you can do before every meal to change everything.

It’s not a chore. It’s beautiful, simple self-care and it does not cost a penny. It’s the physiological switch that turns your body from a state of stress into a state of deep, receptive nourishment.

I’m lying on my couch gazing at my kitchen and truly honouring how it really is the heart of our home. It’s far from fancy but wow it is full of soul. So much connection happens here; soooo much nourishing ( my kids through osmosis are wholefood cooks) and even the occasional discussion ( lol) over who is doing the dishes. I lay here in gratitude that my kids have learned how to nourish themselves wisely - it’s the greatest medicine ! Thank you kitchen! I do love all my wholefood jars - to me they feel like art. Now I need to learn how to film so I can share what we create in this wholesome space !

This is the ultimate nervous system support.

The simple act of coming home to your own body.

Modern living has conditioned us to live from the neck up — looping in stress.

And nowhere is this more visible than in our relationship with food.

We’re drowning in conflicting diet advice and external rules that drown out our body’s innate wisdom.

Food confusion has become its own source of chronic stress — and another way we abandon ourselves.

Every one of those thoughts sends a signal of threat to our body. And a body in threat cannot rest, digest nor find peace.

What if the antidote was presence? Slowing down, tuning out the noise of diet culture and unconditionally loving yourself exactly as you are.

I invite you to place hand on your heart and say..

“It’s okay. You’re safe. You are loved, exactly as you are.”

This creates safety from the inside out. This is how you come home and this profoundly supports your digestion.

This week, can you give yourself permission to practice one small act of coming home?

Perhaps it’s a long bath, a slow nourishing meal where you trust your body’s wisdom or simply breathing safety into your body when it needs support.

Of course what we eat matters. But how we eat — relaxed, present, connected to ourselves — matters just as much. A stressed body can’t digest or absorb properly anyway. The nervous system is the foundation.

P.S. If this idea of ‘coming home’ to your body resonates, send me a DM with the word CONNECT.

Sunday morning nourishing. Organic Greek yoghurt, sweet papaya, coconut, cashews and dates.
Papaya contains natural digestive enzymes which helps support healthy digestion. Rich in vitamin C, antioxidants and fibre, it’s such a beautiful food for gentle nourishment.
I simply work with what I have at home and try to stay in flow with food rather than perfection.
I would’ve loved fresh lime and a drizzle of honey today, but dates it was — and it was still delicious. 🤍

My friend and I are doing a skill swap.

She helps me with my boring techy computer work 🥱 and I cook her family a meal.

We both feel we get the better deal and it’s really very beautiful.

I made her a super simple curry today to take home to her family and just loved her kids responses.

Copy paste :

Nate — damn! this looks so good, Annette’s such a beast.
Ari — I could eat this for the rest of my life.

Serious inspiration to include this recipe in my upcoming offering ( which I’ve been very busy lately working on !)

Food, friendship and a little village energy. I love it !

I was chatting with a very special friend the other day about my work as a food therapist. As we were talking, she said to me, “you are like a food whisperer,” continuing with, “I actually have tears in my eyes listening to what you are saying. I’ve seen so many people and as I talk with you eating my breakfast, my experience with food is different.”

I think that conversation will give me goose bumps for the rest of my life.

It was in that moment that my new business name was born: The Food Whisperer. It feels so right on so many levels. It suggests wisdom, it leans to listening to the whispers of the body and of life and it supports my gently nature.

My work has always been about weaving two worlds together—the beautiful science of how our bodies are designed to be nourished and the deep, intuitive wisdom that lives within each of us. It’s in that sacred space where science meets soul that we find true food and body freedom.

This work is also so deeply connected to my massage practice, which I love. Calming the nervous system, slowing down and coming home to the body.

So, I am announcing this name with a full heart and a deep knowing. It is my joy to introduce you to Annette Francis, The Food Whisperer.
