Dementia Truly Sucks!
My beautiful, funny, kind, workaholic, independent Mum was 73 and had only been retired for a few years when she received her dementia diagnosis toward the end of 2019.
By Sept 2020 she was living in a locked in dementia ward. In early 2021 she became nonverbal and by 2022 she couldn’t walk anymore.
When Eliza and I were visiting her in July 2022 we received a phone call on the third morning while we were getting ready to go in to visit her for the day saying that mum had aspirated while having her breakfast. This resulted in a seizure and she was being rushed to emergency. Thankfully I was there and could also rush to emergency and advocate that they didn’t extend her life. She didn’t have one of any quality anymore.
This resulted in mum being put on end of life care when she returned to the aged care facility later that day. We held her hand and basically watched her starve to death over the next 5 days. It was heartbreaking but one of the most beautiful things I’ll ever experience as I was with her when she took her last breath.
Mums dementia timeline was quick compared to how long many other poor souls and their families suffer for. Although it certainly did not feel quick while living through it!!!
Dementia sucks for the patient, their loved ones and is sadly now the leading cause of death for women and the second leading cause of death for all Australians.
This is not a pity post just an awareness post!
As I see and hear the heartbreaking stories of my fellow fundraisers it makes me more determined to try and help to beat Dementia.
We walk this Sunday, please donate to this worthy cause, every little bit helps!xx
