Let’s talk about cracked heels!
Cracked heels (or heel fissures) are common, especially in the warmer months when we’re more likely to wear open shoes. Not only can they look unsightly, they can also become painful and lead to infections if left untreated.
What happens when heels crack?
• The outer layer of the skin is designed to be a protective barrier. On the heel, this layer often becomes thicker and drier because it’s under constant pressure and friction.
• When the skin loses moisture, it becomes less elastic. Instead of stretching, it starts to split under stress (for example, when walking or standing).
• The fat pad under the heel naturally expands when you stand. If the skin on the heel is too dry and stiff, it can’t accommodate that expansion → the rigid skin splits, forming cracks (fissures).
• If the fissures extend into the deeper layers of the skin, they can become painful and bleed. This also makes it easier for bacteria or fungus to enter → increasing the risk of infection.
What can cause cracked heels?
• Dry skin (often worsened by weather or open footwear)
• Standing for long periods of time on hard surfaces
• Being overweight (increases heel pressure)
• Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis
• Poor footwear choices (open-back / flat shoes)
