Dr Jovanovic is a Specialist General Practitioner (MD, FRACGP) with further training in skin cancer medicine, dermoscopy, and dermatology. Originally trained in the Netherlands, she has extensive experience across emergency and general practice, and brings a strong focus on skin health, early detection, and preventative care. Her approach is thorough and patient-centred, with an emphasis on long-term skin health.

Do you know what Basal Cell Carcinomas are?

Basal cell carcinomas are one of the most common skin cancers amongst young patients right through to elderly. They have many causes including: sun-damage, DNA mutations and genetics.

Clinical features vary from individual to individual but may included a fast or slow growing plaque or nodule, ulcerated and irritated bleeding lesion, skin coloured, pink or pigmented lesion changing in size or shape.

Depending on the type of BCC diagnosed, treatment can include excision biopsy (lesion completely removed), topical treatment, cryotherapy, curettage and electrocautery or photodynamic therapy.

This before and after shows our patient’s old scar on the left, which was caused by an infection to the right shin area.

Management of this patient’s scar included dermal treatments (skin needling and laser resurfacing) to help improve vascularity and texture.

Our patient’s goal was to help lighten years of sun-damage, in particular pigmented lesions and to even out the skin tone.

IPL therapy works by delivering pulses of light energy into the skin, targeting specific chromophores (substances that absorb light) within the skin. Examples include; melanin (responsible for pigmentation) and haemoglobin (found in blood vessels).

The energy from the IPL device is absorbed by these chromophores, causing them to heat up and be destroyed. The body then naturally removes the damaged tissue, leading to improvements in the skin’s appearance.
