Gโday, my name is Dr Matt Gheller, Iโm the Chiropractor at Phillip Island Sport and Rehab Clinic.
My special interest area is therapeutic exercise. I specialise in this area because of my fascination of how it affects the body. In my experience, it can turn someone who is in pain and has dysfunction of the body into a pain free and functional person. It helps people become pain-free and get them back to the things they like doing.
What therapeutic exercise has taught me is that they can create a lasting difference when implemented and done with the right guidance. There are some limitations to hands on therapy like manual manipulation and massage, for example, coming into the clinic to feel the effects, while therapeutic exercises can be done at home, work or on your holiday and if done well they can give relief at the time and support for the future.
To feel the effectiveness of therapeutic exercise, itโs important to use specificity and control to make sure you do not compensate with other muscles or movements. This means making sure you use the muscles youโre supposed to be targeting, without the use of the over-active muscles doing the job of the target muscle.
Itโs important to find the right guidance to ensure youโre working on the right muscles. When you see me, I tend to spend a lot of time with patients ensuring attention to details such as explaining and demonstrating the exercises to ensure the exercise is done properly. Iโm able to can gauge what is too much for a patient (too hard or difficult) and will adjust accordingly.
I have a vast range of exercises and experience in the use of them and will offer alternatives options for the results you need to suit your body and abilities. I often provide descriptive resources to refer to for at home use, such as videos and pictures of the prescribed therapeutic exercise to ensure you continue to do the exercises properly.
A usual treatment with me will consist of finding the right exercises as well as manual and low force manipulations. I will encourage fortnightly or monthly sessions depending on the severity of the conditions.
