South Korean student Jang Ik-sun, 37, has muscular dystrophy and is mostly paralyzed, except for his eye movements and speech. He earned a master’s degree by writing his thesis letter by letter using blinks. His story shows the challenges people with severe disabilities face in education.

Jang was diagnosed at age five but kept studying. He passed exams, got a bachelor’s degree in social welfare, and joined Gwangju University’s Graduate School of Social Welfare in 2019. After finishing his courses in 2021, he officially received his master’s degree on February 21, 2024, along with an academic award.

He had many difficulties, like not being able to take notes. He scanned books himself and got help from an assistant for class materials. During the day, he worked at the Gwangju Muscular Dystrophy Association, and at night, he attended graduate classes.

The hardest part was writing his thesis. He used an eye-tracking mouse to type each letter by blinking. His research focused on the right to life for people with muscle disorders and the lack of caregiving support in South Korea.

Outside of school, Jang runs a YouTube channel called Eye Gamer to spread awareness. “People with muscular dystrophy like us are invisible. I want to bring them into the light,” he said. His message: “Failure is not defeat as long as you don’t give up. Everyone deserves a chance.”
