Sometimes we get a lot of judgement for parenting our kids in a neurodiversity-affirming way. To others it can look like we're just being endlessly permissive. 'Letting them get away with everything.' And not being strict enough.

Nah.

If you are parenting in a way that is respectful of your kid's sensory needs, emotional needs, fluctuating capacity, and neurodivergent learning style- you're doing an amazing job.

If you are helping them listen to their body, learn how to ask for accommodations, and set boundaries- you're doing brilliantly.

You are the expert on your kid.

Yes?

It's the time of the year where many ladybugs are preparing to return to work or school ...

It's also the time of year where neuro-normative expectations about transitions can creep in - leaving us feeling shame, exhaustion or overwhelm.

So just a brief little reminder from our autistic hearts to yours:

⭐️ it's OK to take transitions slowly and to ask for accommodations in the process

⭐️it's OK to lean on known supports or your favourite items as you transition

⭐️it's OK to allow your nervous system time to adjust and for your capacity to fluctuate from day to day

⭐️it's OK that your process will look different from others

⭐️it's not you who are failing to adjust, it's the environment and expectations that are too rigid to accommodate what it is you need

⭐️ you are worthy of support and accommodations

⭐️it's OK to have mixed/confused feelings about the transition

⭐️it's OK to dial down other expectations or demands

⭐️ we know you're doing the very best you can

Feel free to add any other advice for your fellow ladybugs in the comments.

PS - if you have a ladybug starting at school this year, we highly recommend you listen to our podcast episode - 'what your autistic students and children want you to know'
