News from the President!
The Lifestyle Team at John Curtin Aged Care work hard to provide entertaining and interesting activities for our residents and 18 months ago, working with the Community Engagement Committee were able to create a Literary Appreciation Group. This group is a mix of residents from both the nursing home, the independent living units and now, the wider community; with currently 8 regular members.
In its early days, they read The Dressmaker by Rosalie Ham, then watched the movie and compared the two. They read Finding Eliza by local Author Heather Whitford Roche, followed by a session with the Author. We have found that their favourite choice, is when we explore the writings of a particular Author, such as Sophie Green, Sandie Docker and Jennifer Scoullar. These current Australian Authors write stories the group resonate with, often with the location and with their stories.
Another activity we undertook within the group was writing a poem and that took on a life of its own. Initially they protested, but most of them produced one, and we have shared them in the past in the Curtin Chronicle and on the page. What it also did, was create a second group, a Poetry Circle, which has brought in some additional residents. One of our residents is a local and well known Poet and she is a member of both groups.
The Literary Appreciation Group has now evolved into a Bookclub, the first that many have belonged to. The challenge for the Team is sourcing books that both challenge and stimulate them. They started this year with Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey just as the controversy broke. We went ahead with it and encouraged them to judge the book on its own merits. The consensus being, they enjoyed it.
This activity stimulates their mind and has had the additional benefit of creating deeper friendships; and from the feedback we've
received, provided a topic for discussion with their families when visiting: What book are you reading Mum?
The Bookclub meet 3rd Thursday and the
Poetry Circle meet 4th Thursday, both at 10.30am
