The vicious cycle 🔄 Pain with intimacy isn’t “just in your head” - it’s a very real body-brain–muscle response.
An initial pain trigger (like tampon use, a painful speculum exam, period pain, or pain with s*x) can cause the pelvic floor muscles to tighten and spasm.
Over time, the brain remembers this pain and starts to anticipate it. This anticipation leads to guarding and involuntary muscle tension before anything even happens, which then contributes to more pain.
Eventually, an association forms between s*x and pain, and fear-avoidance behaviours can develop, reinforcing the cycle.
How pelvic floor physio can help 🤍
Pelvic floor physiotherapy works to gently break this cycle by:
• reducing muscle overactivity and spasm
• retraining the nervous system’s pain response
• improving relaxation, coordination, and confidence
• addressing contributing factors like breathing, posture, hips, and stress
• supporting graded, pain-free return to intimacy
Painful s*x is common - but it is NOT normal and it is treatable. You deserve care, understanding, and solutions.
If this resonates with you, you’re not alone. 💫
