Our Team:
Lauren Atlee, B.App.Sc (Ex & Sp Sc) MPhty
Principal Physiotherapist. Qualified Exercise Physiologist with a Masters Degree in Physiotherapy

Lauren's first degree was Exercise & Sports Science and it taught her the fundamentals of human physiology and biomechanics. It was here that she gained experience working with athletes to improve their performance, however, finding a “problem” and feeling ill-equipped to fix it lead her to physiotherapy...

Lauren completed a Masters of Physiotherapy on the Gold Coast. Here her eyes were opened to the diverse field of physiotherapy. She spent time training in Intensive Care Unit physio, neurological and respiratory therapy. It wasn’t long before Lauren knew that musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and especially sports therapy was for her. Since graduating Lauren has worked in a purely “hands-on” practice where she gained invaluable experience with a vast range of populations. Lauren has now ventured out on her own and has opened a clinic where she provides a service that assists clients to improve their wellbeing, improve performance or reduce discomfort...no matter what your Lifestyle is!

Happy International Women's Day!

Here's to all the busy women, working Mums, jugglers of housework, work-work and self-improvement. Those that are posting about IWD at 9pm after making school lunches and paying wages.

A highly successful business woman friend once said, in response to the "Mothers guilt" conversation, that you need to look at your audience. Look at what they are getting out of what you do.

So here is my little audience.

I hope I am teaching them that they can "have it all" (even though it may not always run smoothly, or as quickly as you would like).

They can still do what they love (even though it may not be as smooth or anywhere near as quickly as you would like!).

And that they can those around them, themselves and each other.

Only a couple of generations ago it was thought that as you aged you should slow down and take it easy. Sorry to say- its not true.

The body declines as we age, but does it need to stop us? It is a known fact that we get a bit creaky, warming up takes a little longer and our knees can tell us that rain is on the way. But maybe we can slow it all down. The latest research suggests that introducing high intensity exercise every week, with a heart rate of around 80% max even for 10-20 minutes A WEEK can do the job!

Want to get started, start slowly. Gradually build into it, the demands of high intensity training on your body are high so be careful.

Do it properly. It isn’t effective unless you are slightly uncomfortable, you are breathless and sweating.

Follow the hard with the easy. Aim for a 20:80 ratio. And after each bout of high intensity training “unloading” activities should be used. Walking, stretching or yoga work well.

Incorporate some strength. You don’t need weights , your body will do. Its important to help slow down the ageing process.

Meet Mag. Our longest (and most lived) patient.

While she has always had regular physiotherapy to manage a chronic condition, she came to us a few months ago following a deterioration of function.

Mag is strongly independent and keen to keep moving. She knows the benefit of physio, and knows the benefit of a home exercise program (although her compliance is often questionable- as it is for most of us!).

She has recently left us a lovely review.

"Lauren has treated me for over 10 years- she is a highly professional, skilful and caring physiotherapist. I would highly recommend Lifestyle Physiotherapy. "

We thank you Mag, and use your drive to better yourself in your 90's as our Monday Motivation!

21/06/2020

Not only can plyometric exercise build power in the muscles, it can create endurance. It is a commonly used tool in gym programming and a go-to in cross fit or HIIT style workouts… so why then is it done so badly in a rehabilitation setting?

Following an injury it is extremely important to re-introduce plyometric exercise in MOST cases, athletic or not. We need the power and endurance previously mentioned but possibly more importantly we need the neuromuscular adaptation.

The what?!

Neuromuscular adaptation is the bodies ability to fire off an electrical impulse (a nerve impulse) to a muscle, in response to a stimuli. One of the most simple examples is that of foot standing on a rock while out walking- and the muscles in your lower leg and hip that switch on (or off) to correct your body position so you DON’T roll your ankle.

It is all good to do your calf raises slowly with perfect form BUT how does this translate if you are say a soccer player? It doesn’t! you need the final, most important step in your rehab… function. And that’s where plyometrics come in to play.

Concerned you’ve bypassed the last, protective, step in your rehab? We can help…
