N - A C E T Y L C Y S T I N E

Primarily used for its antioxidant, precursor to glutathione and mucolytic properties.

Considered as ‘conditionally essential’ due to the body being able to make it from other amino acids but in times when certain aminos maybe low namely,

methionine and serine supplementation maybe called for.

Quietly it has been used for 60 years for various treatments until recent times when a ‘dangerous’ virus came to town and NAC came into its own.
Being used for many protocols to prevent viral infection and to detox the body against spike proteins.

I consider NAC a very useful supplement in my clinical practice during treatment of the above conditions and many others but I would not suggest self medicating. Speak to your Naturopathic health professional for advice.

I’ve been practicing what I preach.

Although I’ve been a bit quiet on my socials, I’ve been busy helping my clients reach their goals, celebrating birthdays with my boys and on my down time kicking back under a blanket with a book.

I love winter for pulling back and recharging the battery.

I’d love to hear what everyone else does in their downtime during the winter months?

Cholesterol, Friend or Foe?

Before we label Cholesterol as the bad guy, it’s important to understand the vital role that this hormone plays in our bodies.

To help draw a picture in your mind it acts like a building material providing structural integrity to our cell walls allowing them to function effectively. It plays an essential role building cell membranes & involved in the production of brain neurotransmitters.
Additionally it plays an important role in aiding the body to produce other hormones such as Oestrogen and Testosterone as well as fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin D.

The two parts to Cholesterol that are carried through our bloodstream.
LDL (Low density lipoprotein) known as the bad guy transporting cholesterol to the blood stream where it is needed.
HDL (High density lipoprotein) acting as the good guy working as a clean up agent transports the excess back to the liver to be excreted as bile.

So whilst it is true we want adequate amounts of HDL & less LDL, the question remains why is it not getting cleared out of the body as it’s ment too?

Your liver function, is the answer. If your liver is functioning optimally then excess LDL would be excrete & not stored in the arterial walls and floating in your bloodstream.

My tips for healthy liver function & keeping your total cholesterol in check:

💪🏻Reduce or alcohol to social occasions

💪🏻Throw out any oils in your pantry that are labeled as ‘vegetable oil, canola or sunflower oils’. Cooking with these are carcinogenic & will not benefit you in anyway.

💪🏻Refined sugars & grains are well known to increase inflammation as well as impair liver function so avoiding, limiting or cutting these foods is important.

💪🏻 Western diets are generally high in Omega 6 and not enough omega 3.
A little backwards in my opinion when Omega 3 is well documented & very good for reducing cardiovascular risk.

💪🏻Add good amounts of garlic, ginger & turmeric to your meals or as herbal teas.

💪🏻 Mindfully eating foods with a low glycemic load, rich in fibres & phytonutrients.

Nurturing your cycle with good nutrition

Seed cycling offers a natural way to help regulate your hormones to aid with mentrsation, fertility and manage undesirable period symptoms.

As your hormones shift throughout your cycle the body requires different vitamins, minerals and plant medicine to support this natural function.

Eating a range of seeds amongst other nutrient dense foods through the phases of the cycle supports the production of Estrogen (Days 1-14) and Progesterone (days 15-28)

This is of course not the same for everyone.

Seed cycling offers a range of Essential fatty acids, lignans, magnesium and zinc all of which are important to keep a balance of hormones and detoxification.

Some other foods for thought

Follicular phase ~ Cruciferous, citrus, sauerkraut, avocado and white meat. Herbal teas try, Shatavari and Red clover.

Ovulation phase ~ Eggs, Tuna, Quinoa, berries and walnuts. Teas try, lemon balm tea and Vitex.

Luteal phase ~ Almonds, spinach, sweet potato, sprouts and evening primrose.

Menstruation phase ~ dark chocolate, liver, chia seeds and seaweed. Herbal teas try Nettle and raspberry leaf.

If your cycle is irregular, you are just regulating post pill, your period is absent, painful, or pms. If you are peri or menopausal give these tips a try.

You can have your chocolate and eat it too…

Polyphenols represent a superfamily of diverse compounds that are found in all parts of plants.

Some have gained popularity because of the Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) found in green tea and resveratrol in grapes (red wine)

You won’t find Polyphenols list on the nutritional labels, but working with a natural health care professional you’ll learn what you need to know to keep your body in balance.

Don’t wait for illness when you can do a wellness check. Jump over to my website to book a consultation if you want to know more.
