What's the difference between Animal-Assisted Therapy and Animal Therapy?
The answer is nothing, according to the Animal Assisted Services sector (AAS) here in Australia as well as globally - but according to NDIA, DSS and Bill Shorten there is a difference!

Therapy should only ever be delivered by a registered health professional.

This use of terminology is out of context with industry definitions and is representing a significant risk to participants, service providers and plan managers alike. As ATL continues it's advocacy journey to have "Animal Therapy" removed off section 10 of the transitional rules. Please help us by completing our surveys!

Have you ever just stopped for a moment and thought about how it feels the very first time you meet somebody new?

🌼What is like when you are introduced to each other?
🌼Are there feelings of excitement?
🌼Are there feelings of nervousness?
🌼How do these feelings show up for you?

Meeting someone new for the first time can bring a variety of feelings to the present moment. Recognising them and allowing them to be experienced is so powerful when we are developing and forming new relationships.

Today our clients were introduced to a new herd member. “ Miss Shelby”.
We are very excited to welcome Shelby and we look forward to the connection’s and new relationships she will form with our clients.

Rainy Days don’t mean we can not still hold our scheduled client sessions. These days provide for greater curiosity, creativity trust and deeper connections when we invite our Equine Partners into spaces they may not frequently visit. Today was a great opportunity to invite the horses indoors and practice being calm and regulated while working on fine motor skills that support us in our daily activities.

Equine Assisted Learning is not “Therapy”. Our clients don’t attend sessions with us because they need therapy. They attend sessions with us to explore, develop and build their capacity to build and strengthen skills and strategies to support psychosocial, emotional wellbeing and overall life skills development.

What is positive Psychosocial Wellbeing…… it is education and learning around developing, managing and understanding emotions, provides a sense of meaning and self worth, and it supports the development of meaningful and healthy relationships.

Why is this all so important? Positive psychosocial wellbeing supports us to manage stressful and challenging situations when they arise, supports people to lead meaningful relationships or friendships, and above all it promotes, supports and welcomes the exploration of all feelings…. Positive and negative . It provides healthy ways to explore and experience all feelings no matter their nature.

So where do the Horses and other animals come into this. They are the assistants. They assist to facilitate and support the process of each individual when exploring psychosocial wellbeing and other life skills . Horses are unique in the sense they are non- judgmental and provide an array of authentic feedback to individuals.

Matt was a vibrant 16-year-old, full of life and excitement. To celebrate getting his driver’s license, he and his friends spent hours joyfully driving around, lost in their newfound freedom. But their adventure took a tragic turn when they drifted into oncoming traffic. The accident claimed the lives of all three of Matt’s friends and the other driver.

The weight of survivor’s guilt, PTSD, depression, and anxiety overwhelmed Matt, leading him to the brink of su***de. Despite his parents' efforts to help him through intensive talk therapy, Matt couldn't bring himself to discuss the accident, and his suicidal thoughts only deepened.

In desperation, Matt’s parents found the Equine Partnership Program, a mental health organization that incorporates horses into psychotherapy. When Matt arrived, he was among the most suicidal clients they had ever encountered.

Gradually, as Matt began working with his equine partner, Jubee, something within him started to shift. The true turning point came unexpectedly during a lunging session, where Matt was learning to guide Jubee using voice commands and body language. Suddenly, Jubee bolted, and Matt found himself being dragged across the arena, refusing to let go of the lunge line.

When Jubee finally stopped, Matt remained silent for a long time. When he spoke, his words were profound: “I guess I really need to learn how to let go.”

This was a pivotal moment in Matt’s healing journey. They signified the beginning of his emotional release.

Over the following months, Matt continued working with Jubee, forming a deep bond that allowed him to gradually let go of the guilt and pain that had consumed him.

As we mark the beginning of , join us in raising awareness and supporting those in need of mental health support.

“I may not speak your language, but when you spend time in my presence and listen with your heart, you will hear my voice.”

When we listen with our whole body, we can absorb so much more than just the words.
Listening with our whole body creates connection, confidence and overall calmness.

This work never ceases to amaze me.🥰

Being safe is about being seen and heard and being allowed to be who you are and to speak your truth, no matter who we are, or where we are on life’s journey. Take a moment to just be present and see what unfolds.
