With demand for mini-scleral lenses growing, the ACO is launching a new hands-on workshop to help optometrists build practical skills and confidence in this complex area of contact lens fitting.
The workshop will explore best practices, real-world case examples, and troubleshooting tips through two focused presentations:
• Fitting mini-scleral lenses with confidence: best practices and techniques
• From first fit to follow-up fits and fixes: a practical approach to scleral lenses
Alongside the presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to work through case studies, handle fitting sets, and practise applying and removing mini-scleral lenses. This practical, small-group format is designed to simulate real-life clinical scenarios and help bridge the gap between theory and application.

Designed for optometrists looking to expand into specialty lenses, the workshop will address common challenges such as patient education, aftercare, and adapting fitting strategies for complex cases. It is particularly suited to those with some contact lens experience who are ready to explore more advanced fitting techniques and broaden their scope of practice.

Accredited by Optometry Australia for 4.5 interactive CPD hours, the session will support optometrists in offering effective, tailored care using mini-sclerals.

This event is sponsored by Good Optical and EyeSpace.

To enhance your expertise in mini-scleral lens fitting, join Shonit Jagmohan from Vision Camberwell and Scott Panozza, Manager of Contact Lens Services at the ACO Eye Health, for a hands-on workshop. An important message from KERATOCONUS AUSTRALIA...

For the past 25 years, volunteers have provided support to young Australians facing vision loss due to the corneal disease called keratoconus.

Recent research indicates that upwards of 300,000 people may have keratoconus in Australia and that number could be rising.

What we do...

• We are Australia's only peer support group for keratoconus
• We operate a helpline for people with keratoconus and their families
• We assist patients find eye-carers experienced in keratoconus in their local area
• We advocate on behalf of those with keratoconus for more accessible and affordable treatment options
• We fund research into the causes of this mysterious disease and to find a cure
• We helped launch the world's first keratoconus registry in conjunction with the Save Sight Institute
• We provide information to newly diagnosed patients about the disease and its treatments
• We raise awareness in the community about its impact on patients
• We initiated and chair the Vision 2020 Australia Mental Health working party
• We support tissue donation for corneal transplants

We need your support

Please go to our Donation page and give generously so we can continue our important work on behalf of the Australian keratoconus community

Although we'd like to think that what we do makes people see and function at their best - there are some of our patients with severe eye disease who still suffer from LOW VISION

This initiative from SeeWay will be of interest.

SeeWay has launched to eye care professionals.

New national service launched to support Australians with low vision.

The national launch of SeeWay has marked a powerful new chapter in the support landscape for Australians with permanent low vision. Developed by Guide Dogs NSW/ACT and informed by years of research and lived experience co-design, SeeWay is already being embraced by eye care professionals as a long-awaited solution to a glaring service gap.

Unlike existing models of care, SeeWay is designed for the more than 70,000 people who don’t meet criteria for funded services but still live every day with the impact of permanent vision loss. These are patients whose vision may be stable but whose daily lives remain profoundly affected - emotionally, socially and practically.

SeeWay General Manager Mirné le Roux said “SeeWay exists to wrap practical, personalised, no-gap support around the people who need it most. But it only works when our eye care professional partners connect patients to it. They can do this by simply directing their patients to

www.seeway.com.au

We know the best outcomes happen when we work together”.
There’s no formal referral process – eye care professionals simply direct patients to www.seeway.com.au to register themselves. The online resource brings information and low vision support together in the one place and is fully client-led. Some may want help adjusting emotionally, others might want digital skills coaching, and others may just need the right information and pathway. Services will continue to expand and evolve, with new content added weekly. SeeWay clients can access:

• Professional, no-gap counselling (with GP referral)
• Personalised digital skills training
• Curated resources tailored to their diagnosis
• Pathways to trusted condition-specific support organisations or local one-on-one low vision services

SeeWay Marketing Manager Nadine McArthur said “What makes SeeWay different is that it doesn’t assume what people need. It listens first and then tailors support that truly fits their personal lifestyle and goals. No two people experience vision changes in the same way.”

With the national rollout now underway, SeeWay is already changing lives. As word spreads, the hope is that more Australians living with permanent low vision can stop just coping and start living well.

SeeWay Business Development Manager Monica Lette said “SeeWay is different because it focuses purely on holistic lifestyle support – not clinical advice or treatment. We’re here to complement the work of eye care professionals, not replace it. Some eye care professionals are already telling us what a difference it’s made to their patients when the medical journey is underway, but the day-to-day life adjustment is only just beginning.”

As part of its mission, SeeWay is also building a rich library of lived experience stories and practical insights – giving voice to the everyday realities of life with low vision and creating a safe space so people don't have to rely on online search results for answers that often miss the mark.
SeeWay Writer Holly Kelly explains: “At SeeWay, we’re not just sharing information - we’re telling the stories that often go unheard. Low vision isn’t a special need, it’s part of the human experience for many Australians, and accessibility should be part of everyday life. We write with heart and honesty, drawing on lived experience, expert insights, and a deep respect for the realities people face. Your patients might be interested in reading about how the brain rewires itself during vision loss (neuroplasticity), or what’s involved in accessing audio descriptions at the cinema, or maybe they want tips on something as simple and important as making a cup of tea with low vision. This information may not fit into a clinical consult. That’s the space we hold.”

About SeeWay
SeeWay was created by Guide Dogs NSW/ACT to meet a growing, urgent need - one that was too often overlooked. Every year, thousands of Australians begin losing their vision. Many are not legally blind, and do not qualify for any formal support.
For more than 60 years, Guide Dogs has been by the side of Australians with vision loss – helping people of all ages live independently, safely and with confidence.
SeeWay is the next chapter in this legacy; a bold, timely step to support Australians earlier, more holistically, and nationally at no cost. Experiencing changes in your vision can be life changing, but with the right support, no Australian should face it on their own.

SeeWay is here to provide guidance, resources, and support tailored to individuals facing changes in vision.

Last Tuesday, CCLSA NSW held their first event - Dry Eye Management - optometry and ophthalmology working together.

Collaborative care model works well in optometry & ophthalmology as it provides shorter wait times for the patients and also as it reduces the time burden for ophthalmologists while providing individualised care for the patients. We had 3 wonderful speakers sharing their expertise on dry eye management to the attendees - Maria Markoulli, Dr Erica Darian-Smith and Dr Kenneth Ooi.

Maria talked about role of nutrition in dry eye. As the chair of Nutrition subcomittee with TTFOS she worked with a group of health care professionals & scientists assessing the effect of nutrition on ocular surface. She broke down TFOS DEWS II report on nutrition into 8 different subcategories and she concluded that while Good nutrition is clearly pivotal to good health and has impact on ocular surface, its relationship is still its infancy and our recommendation should always be based on evidence based science.

Erica shared the principles and importance of dry eye work up in laser refractive surgery and how she triages her dry eye patients. She shared her in office stepwise treatment protocol and also discussed some dry eye management products, such as PRP, that are available overseas (but not readily available in Australia) .

Lastly, Kenneth used one complex dry eye patient to share his triage and treatment protocol for a patient suffering from dry eye symptoms. Understanding the importance of lid hygiene methods, lubricant drops (different classes), general health history, current medication, objective assessment tools (e.g. keratograph, meibography etc) IPL and HRT were all discussed as part of this case patient's treatment plan as part of learning.

It was a full house event and there were a lot of questions from the audience indicating high level of engagement for the speakers presentations.

As always, these events can't run without sponsors and big thanks to Alcon, Seqirus, SunPharmaceuticalsSpain-SLU and GOOD OPTICAL SERVICES for their sponsorship and supporting Cornea & Contact Lens Society of Australia (CCLSA) so that we can do what we do best - promoting education, research, professional development and networking in the cornea and contact lens field.

Big thanks to CCLSA NSW committee members for dedicating time on top of their daily lives to run and organise this partivular CCLSA event.

We look forward to seeing you all at our next event!

Here's an invitation from J&J to join them for their first 'Live' interactive educational event for the year: 'Grow your contact lens prescribing skills & meet patient needs with ACUVUE'

Whilst the webinar has been tailored for recent graduates and early career optometrists, it also suits those who'd like a 'refresher' on successful contact lens prescribing utilising the products within the broader ACUVUE portfolio, including the recently launched OASYS MAX 1-Day Family.
Of particular note is the “interactive” format and associated CPD allocation – highly sought after by Australian optometrists n meeting annual AHPRA registration requirements.
