It's April 1 which means it's the first day of what I am calling Arid April, a month without alcohol for me.
I'm trying one of the very large range of drinks that contain no alcohol but something called nootropics. These are mostly herbal additives called adaptogens.
Adaptogens are used in Western herbal medicine as a way to help the body cope with stress, fatigue and anxiety. These nootropic drinks nearly always also contain an amino acid called L-Theanine. This is commonly found in tea leaves and also promotes relaxation and improves focus.
I'm looking forward to seeing some health improvements, I might even start running faster!!?? (I can dream can't I?)
I'd love to hear if you've tried any of these products and what you thought of them.

☝️Fun fact, I spent two years full time studying nutritional medicine and Western herbal medicine. These herbs can be really powerful when used in the right dosages and in the right way.

Did you know that all registered remedial massage therapists have to undergo continuing education to be eligible for insurance and health fund rebate status?
This certificate is my latest completion. In my clinic I often am privileged enough to hear some very personal stories of what people have, and are currently, dealing with in their lives.
Some call this "accidental counselling". With that in mind I wanted to ensure that I have some level of competency when having these conversations. I've always had a fascination with psychology and in another life I feel I would have pursued that occupation.

I'm now about to start on my next project and if you're a runner, a hiker, or just a human person that enjoys walking pain free, you will be interested in the new information I learn from it!
Stay tuned....

Do you know the difference between a remedial massage and a relaxation, also called a therapeutic massage?
There's quite a difference. Unfortunately it can be confusing as there often isn't a real difference in price (in fact day spas are regularly a fair bit more expensive!), but the difference in education is substantial.
A remedial therapist, at the very least, has spent a minimum of 12 more months of study in anatomy and physiology. Then, as a requirement of our registration with nationally recognised associations, we undergo regular ongoing education. Many of us have also studied further to include things like dry needling and cupping.
In my case I also have qualifications in strength and conditioning and nutritional medicine.
Visiting a qualified remedial therapist means your specific issues can be addressed appropriately and safely. We can also offer exercises and suggestions for self care to help you achieve your health goals faster.
If I came answer any further questions please reach out!
I'll see you soon 🩵

I find I work better when I have a goal, something to focus on, a reason why.
Currently I'm working on my main goal of completing a 1/2 marathon (21km) in mid May. This will be my second half marathon but this time I'm hoping to have a more enjoyable experience than the first time. (long story involving a pair of shoes that were actively trying to kill my feet resulting in a very painful, soul crushing second half....)
My second goal is to cut back on the amount of alcohol that is starting to creep into my life. So I'm declaring April as Arid April, in other words, an alcohol free month. I don't drink that much, just a glass or two a night on most nights, but I am noticing that it's crept up to the current amount from one glass for 3 or 4 nights and I don't want it to sneak up any further!
I believe that cutting out unwanted and empty calories in the lead up to my half marathon can only help my performance so that gives me a second reason to stick to my plan.
What are my whys? Running has become an actual mental health saviour for me and I notice a profound difference when I don't stick to my running program. I'm a nicer and more positive person to be around and I don't have as many intrusive thoughts or ruminate as much when I'm active every day. And alcohol can too easily become a bad habit, something that we start to think we "need" to unwind at the end of the day. So I'm teaching myself better habits.

I would love to hear what goals you are currently working on and what plans you have in place to achieve them!

And if anyone wants to join me during Arid April we can support each other!

This morning I managed an extra 5kg PB on my deadlift and 4kg on my bench press! This is the culmination of an 8 week strength program and I'm pretty happy with myself!

Why is this important, and why should you be also building strength in your own body?
Apart from making the rest of your day easier, think gardening, carrying shopping, wrangling kids, playing your favourite sport, etc, there are also some VERY compelling reasons as we age - and we are ALL aging!!

💪Strength training is a critical "insurance policy" for aging because it directly counters sarcopenia—the natural loss of muscle mass and strength that begins as early as your 30s. After age 30, inactive adults can lose 3% to 8% of their muscle mass per decade, a rate that accelerates significantly after age 60.

Key Benefits for Healthy Ageing

💪Preserves Independence: Strengthening the lower body (legs and hips) is vital for "functional" tasks like rising from a chair, climbing stairs, and carrying groceries without assistance.

💪Prevents Falls and Fractures: Muscle loss is a leading cause of frailty and balance issues. Strength training improves coordination and reaction time, helping you "catch yourself" during a stumble to avoid life-altering hip or wrist fractures.

💪Builds Bone Density: Resistance exercises cause muscles to "tug" on bones, stimulating bone-forming cells. This is one of the most effective ways to slow or reverse bone loss and prevent osteoporosis.

💪Protects the Brain: Regular lifting is linked to improved blood flow to the brain and better memory. Studies suggest it can slow the shrinkage of the brain's white matter, potentially reducing the risk of dementia.

💪Boosts Metabolism: Muscle tissue is metabolically active and burns more calories at rest than fat. Maintaining muscle helps manage weight and improves insulin sensitivity, lowering the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

See you at the gym! It's NEVER too late to start 🩵

I have a lot of virtues (if I do say so myself) but patience is NOT one of them. It's something I'm consciously working on, but some days I fail miserably. Today was one of those days. 😑
I'll try again tomorrow. 🩵

Maybe a massage would help?? 🤔 😃

I meet amazing young/older people every day in my job and I always like to find out what their secret is.
Overwhelmingly, its a combination of good healthy food, regularly and consistently moving your body, social connection and finding the love in life.

🩵These things sound very doable to me.🩵

Happy International Womens Day! (IWD)

I love this qoute from Glennon Doyle:

"I don't want to find comfort in the weakness and pain of other women. I want to find joy and inspiration in the success of other women.
Because that brings me happier. And if we keep disliking and tearing down strong women, instead of loving them, supporting them, and voting for them, we won't have any strong women left"

The only way we can begin to balance the scales (this years IWD theme) is if we band together and champion each other.

So from one strong woman to another, and yes you ARE stronger than you think, let's continue fighting for equality, respect and safety for us all.

Lymphatic drainage massage seems to be getting a lot of attention at the moment, but what is it and who might benefit from it?

Understanding the importance of the lymph system may be of special interest to everyday people and athletes as we regularly sustain injuries. When we injure our soft tissues (tendons, ligaments, muscles, bursa) fluid collects in the small spaces that surround the damaged tissue, this fluid is referred to as swelling or oedema. This is part of the natural healing process as the body works to bring nutrient-rich fluid to the injured tissue for repair. Recovery time can be decreased dramatically the quicker we can move the old, stagnant fluid out and flood the tissue with fresh nourishment for regeneration.

Lymphatic Drainage massage is a light whole body massage treatment that targets the lymphatic system directly beneath the skin. By using gentle massage techniques such as pumping or rotary movements in the correct directions, lymph flow is encouraged in the body and this massage helps the detoxification process of the body by aiding the lymph system to eliminate waste material.

Some benefits of manual lymphatic drainage are:

Following traumatic sports or day-to-day injuries

Increased recovery post events

Post-surgical conditions (especially, knee, hip replacements, and back surgery)

Post cancer treatments and surgery.

Regeneration of tissues ( eg from burns,  post-surgical scarring )

To enhance detoxification of the body if you have feelings of “sluggishness”

Oedema during pregnancy

Reduction in symptoms of chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia

Deep relaxation to aid insomnia, stress, depression, and loss of vitality

Immune System stimulation and support
