Dr Richard Hamilton is in Melbourne attending the 28th Advanced Plastic Surgery Workshop, this year focused on Facial Plastic Surgery, an area of particular interest in his practice.

Having participated in every workshop since its inception, Dr Hamilton values the meeting for its depth of expertise and practical discussion of evolving techniques and developments in the field. The event also brings together surgeons from across Australia to share knowledge, experience and professional perspectives.

Ongoing education and peer collaboration remain central to maintaining high standards of care.

Dr Hamilton recently caught up with his mentor, Professor Wayne Morrison, who led the Plastic Surgery Unit at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne during Dr Hamilton’s training. Professor Morrison later helped establish microsurgery services in Sweden before returning to Australia to head the newly formed Plastic Surgery Unit at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world yet it is also one of the few cancers that can often be identified early with simple observation.

Most concerning lesions don’t appear overnight. They evolve gradually changing in colour, shape, size or behaviour. Because these changes happen slowly, they’re easy to ignore.

Things worth paying attention to:
• A spot that looks different from others
• A mark that bleeds, crusts or won’t heal
• A mole that changes in colour or border
• A new lesion in adulthood

Regular professional skin checks matter, particularly for patients with significant sun exposure history or fair skin types.
Early assessment usually means simpler treatment and smaller procedures.

If something looks different it’s worth having it reviewed.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - What You Should Know

Do you wake up with numbness, tingling or pain in your hand or wrist, especially at night? These are common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition caused by pressure on the median nerve as it passes through the wrist.

🖐️ What is it?
Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the narrow passageway in your wrist compresses the median nerve. This can lead to symptoms like:
• tingling or numbness in the thumb and first three fingers
• pain or weakness in grip
• symptoms that are worse at night or with repetitive hand use

🔍 Who’s at risk?
It can occur from repetitive wrist and hand movements, work tasks, injury, arthritis, fluid retention (e.g., pregnancy), diabetes and more.

💡 What can help?
Many mild cases are managed conservatively with rest, activity modification, splints, or therapy. But if symptoms persist or are affecting daily life, a specialist assessment may be recommended.

✋ Surgical options
When conservative treatments aren’t easing symptoms, carpal tunnel release surgery can decompress the nerve. At Hamilton House, Dr Hamilton performs this procedure as a day surgery, often under local anaesthesia or sedation, helping patients return home the same day.
