Carpal tunnel syndrome can vary in intensity. When conservative measures, such as splinting, prove to be ineffective, then surgical decompression of the median nerve, carpal tunnel release, is the most effective treatment option.

During a hand surgery consultation with Dr. Hamilton at our Adelaide or peripheral offices, patients will have their hand examined for strength, function and sensitivity to ensure a correct diagnosis. Sometimes testing is also arranged in the form of a nerve conduction study, which will usually indicate the presence of a nerve conduction block, significant in carpal tunnel syndrome. After a thorough diagnostic session, Dr. Hamilton may recommend a procedure known as carpal tunnel release.

Hamilton House Plastic Surgery has been set up as a “See and Treat” Skin Cancer clinic for country patients suffering from malignant skin cancer lesions.

Where possible and with sufficient information from referring GPs, eg details of blood thinners which have to be ceased prior to surgery, digital images of lesions of concern etc., arrangements can often be made to carry out the consultation and surgery at Hamilton House in the one visit at our “See and Treat Clinic”. This can save much extra travel, time, cost and stress.

Is your Surgeon a Member of ASAPS?
If they are, you can be assured that your surgeon has passed the highest surgical skills test recognised by the governing bodies here in Australia and New Zealand. That means they have the letters FRACS after their name.
FRACS stands for a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the only accredited training provider of surgeons in Australia and New Zealand.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world yet it is also one of the few cancers that can often be identified early with simple observation.

Most concerning lesions don’t appear overnight. They evolve gradually changing in colour, shape, size or behaviour. Because these changes happen slowly, they’re easy to ignore.

Things worth paying attention to:
• A spot that looks different from others
• A mark that bleeds, crusts or won’t heal
• A mole that changes in colour or border
• A new lesion in adulthood

Regular professional skin checks matter, particularly for patients with significant sun exposure history or fair skin types.
Early assessment usually means simpler treatment and smaller procedures.

If something looks different it’s worth having it reviewed.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - What You Should Know

Do you wake up with numbness, tingling or pain in your hand or wrist, especially at night? These are common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition caused by pressure on the median nerve as it passes through the wrist.

🖐️ What is it?
Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the narrow passageway in your wrist compresses the median nerve. This can lead to symptoms like:
• tingling or numbness in the thumb and first three fingers
• pain or weakness in grip
• symptoms that are worse at night or with repetitive hand use

🔍 Who’s at risk?
It can occur from repetitive wrist and hand movements, work tasks, injury, arthritis, fluid retention (e.g., pregnancy), diabetes and more.

💡 What can help?
Many mild cases are managed conservatively with rest, activity modification, splints, or therapy. But if symptoms persist or are affecting daily life, a specialist assessment may be recommended.

✋ Surgical options
When conservative treatments aren’t easing symptoms, carpal tunnel release surgery can decompress the nerve. At Hamilton House, Dr Hamilton performs this procedure as a day surgery, often under local anaesthesia or sedation, helping patients return home the same day.

📞 If numbness or pain in your hand is impacting your quality of life, talk to your GP about a referral for assessment.
