Me : Dear Brain, thank you for making sure I breathe. Thanks for helping me with my math, and for helping me think ahead. And a big thanks for keeping me safe! You're awesome. Is there anything I can do in return?

Brain: You're welcome! You know I love solving problems – But sometimes, maybe, you could just give me a break and let life unfold? Just see what happens next?

Me: Ok..... Hmmm Haaaa....I'll just let go of a problem and see what happens.... I'll give you a break from them. It Feels weird though.

Brain: Thats it tiger.

You need to realise that I'm not here to control everything!

Just let go for a bit.

See what unfolds.

Just try enjoying life for a change!

A friendly reminder to Breathe...

Why not try this 3 part - Calm and Focus Breath -

Lets get set up first -

1- Straighten the spine. Relax the face. Put on a slight smile :-)

2 - Breathe In through the nose with a focus on -
- filling up from below the belly button
- then expand the ribs with your breath,
- now breathe all the way up to the collar bones... Sip in some more and more ! and more -there is always more!

3- HOLD IN for a count of 5

4- Then release super super slowly through pursed lips....

5- When empty, squeeze more air out with the lower belly muscles... more.... more - there is allways more!

6 Allow the air to naturally fill you up again from the belly button area and repeat x 3 and see the observe the sense of focus and calmness in your mind and body!

If we start by being kind to ourselves. The rest will flow.

My favourite 3 things to be kind to myself are-

1- Stay hydrated and eat well (duh) but I forget it so easily.
2- Manage my thoughts. Thoughts are powerful things. Be selective in the ones we nurture (go you good thing!)
3 - Practice good emotions. It's like going to the gym for my emotions. The more I practice gratitude the easier it is to do it !

Getting good sleep is also a must!

I’m allways attracted to this locker at the gym. I use it every time.

A well meaning gym staff member carefully printed out inspiring quotes and stuck them with sticky tape on random lockers.

The one that attracted me was-

“Progress is earned, not given. Keep pushing’

On reflection...

it’s a great formula for burnout.

Keep pushing… is something we often do.

Even if tired, sick and exhausted. We keep pushing.

The thing is...

Even in the gym we do sets. (eg 3 sets of 8 reps)

Push hard with good form, then have a break.

Refresh.

Then push hard again.

If we keep pushing without a rest, we fail and break.

Soooo....

I might sneak in with a new strip and stick it up with sticky tape.

It will say-

“Progress is earned, not given. Keep pushing, take a break, then push again. Repeat. Enjoy’

Not quite as catchy but definitely healthier!

In response to the 'weakening post'. I developed a strengthening post.

It got so long I'm breaking it down into bite size pieces!

Maybe one of these will resonate and help you strengthen and thrive today.

The Strengthening #1

The strengthening occurs slowly, consciously

Instead of competing,
We collaborate.
We build and strengthen together.

We strengthen when we consistently walk toward our dreams.
Face the fears and walk straight through them. Strengthen.

We strengthen when we turn our traumas into triumph.
Asking questions like "what is the lesson in this for me?"
Strengthen.

When we walk with our shoulders back,
Chin up, eyes expanded, smiling.
Breathing deeply and slowly.
We strengthen.

We strengthen When we choose real food.
Over processed.

THE WEAKENING

The weakening happens slowly, unconsciously.

When we mindlessly grab for the phone,
For a fix of digital dopamine.

When we eat for distraction.
Not hunger.

When we sit.
All day long. Staring with dry eyes.
Sacrificing dreams, ambition and adventure…
for money, safety or security.

The weakening happens without us knowing.
When we think strengthening our immune system is taking a shot, potion or pill.
When we forget that true health is a healthy body, full of sunshine, clean water, colorful foods and renewing emotions.

The weakening happens when we become victims to our thoughts.
The thoughts that pull us down, make us sad and anxious, resentful.
We rinse and repeat them.
Unconscious of their weakening effect.

The weakening happens when we numb our emotions.
"Feel them?….. No! I don't want to feel them!!!"
Turn the other way.
Take a drink, take a t**e, have a smoke, eat, stare at a screen….weakening.

The weakening happens when we stop talking.
Eating dinner alone in front of the damned screen.
Family members in their rooms. Doing the same.
Eating, staring, numbing.

The weakening happens when we let fear rule us.
When fear makes our decisions for us.
"I'd love to do that but" Fear. Fear. Fear. Hisses in your ear.
"Oh, maybe another day…."

The weakening happens when we forget to breathe.
When we breathe shallow, fearful breaths all day.
When we have long forgotten the renewing power of long, slow & deep breaths.

The weaking is a subtle process.
Seemingly normal to the naked eye.
But once you see it.
It can't be unseen.

A wise person once said to me 'What's in your way IS your way'.

I had a seriously sore knee.

I paid $300 to go to a knee specialist. The doc said

'you tore your meniscus a long time ago it is now osteo arthritis...'

Guess what the doc told me? -

'I can burn your nerve endings in your knee so you don't feel the pain any longer'

Wha... that didn't really sit well with me.

So I researched and found other ways to manage the situation.

It turns out moving and strengthening the area helps alot.

So I did.

For the past 4 years I've been going to the gym lifting stuff up and putting it down. Stretching and strengthening.

I was weak in my body in areas I was not aware of.

My knee is now heaps better. And everything else is stronger as well.

So at 47 I'm physically and mentally stronger than I have ever been.

So thank you busted knee for taking me on this journey and making me stronger.

Instead of avoiding, numbing or inflaming the issue ask yourself this one question.
