So sad saddened to hear news of the passing of Michel Odent, whose vision and writing reshaped the way we understand human birth.

Michel reminded us that birth is not a medical procedure to be controlled, but a primal rhythm journey to be respected and honoured.
He advocated for choice, homebirth-like maternity units, warm water births, protecting the birthing woman’s privacy and honouring her instincts, undisturbed and untimed contact between mothers and their baby’s ; he was among the first to discuss the importance of the microbiome, and questioned many of the practices that had (and have) become “normalised” in overmedicalised maternity systems globally.

Michel Odent’s legacy lives on in every dimmed, quiet birthing space, and in every midwife his words and work inspired, empowering and normalising the birthing journey. He was the god father of waterbirth.

Thank you, Michel, for your passion, vision and committment to women and newborns.

The world in a better place having your wisdom and knowledge with us and we Thankyou.

Fridays have never been so special.
Tip for the day;
Your newborn baby needs approximately 8 - 12 feeds every 24 hours.
Breastfeeding your baby can help develop that close baby bond. It also gives you an opportunity to interact together. Breastfeed your baby unwrapped and let them touch the breast and have lots of skin to skin.

Providing expressed breastmilk to babies and children in early childhood education and care centres supports mother and child to continue breastfeeding.

A breastfeeding-friendly environment and practices which promote breastfeeding are an asset to a centre or service providing education and care for babies and children.

Early Childhood workers can promote breastfeeding by knowing how to correctly store, prepare and use expressed breastmilk. It’s important to support the mother baby dyad of breastfeeding in all environments.

The Breast crawl occurs not long after birth…….uninterrupted skin to skin.
Baby will then move their legs and arms in small pushes making the journey to the breast.
They may stop to rest a few times
Your baby uses their senses of touch, taste, smell, hearing, and sight to find your breast
They open their mouth, salivate, and stick their tongue out to lick your skin
When your baby is ready they will latch on to your breast and transfer colostrum.

Babies are born without a set circadian rhythm and their pineal gland does not start producing melatonin until 9-12 weeks after birth. So the melatonin in breast milk that is produced higher in night milk naturally promotes and fosters sleep.

Uninterrupted Skin-to-skin contact after birth is the gold standard of practice for mothers and babies.
Also known as kangaroo care, this concept was introduced by Dr Nils Bergman in the 80s across the Western Cape Province in South Africa and shortly after the world adopted “Kangaroo Mother Care as it was known.

From Timor Leste…..
Breast milk contains antibodies. Formula does NOT.

The long term benefits of for mothers and children CANNOT be replicated with infant formula.

Infant formula carries risks, from wrong preparation/proportion and lacks immunological and nutrition properties for healthy growth and development.

Formula feeding puts children at risk of malnutrition. While breastfeeding prevents malnutrition in all its forms.

Frequent breastfeeding maintains good breast milk supply.

Mothers that have stopped breastfeeding or are mixed feeding are able to re-establish breastfeeding, through a process called relactation. Providing mothers with breastfeeding support and accurate information is key. Empower families and enable breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is a team effort!
