Rehearsal this morning for tomorrow's big concert in the village! This is the advanced group of drummers rocking it with Adama on lead djembe and Massa on the duns.

A lesson on the kpalogo with Lawrence, electrical engineer by day and drummer by night!
This was my first go on these drums, which are made with goatskin, tuned with pegs and played with a different technique from djembe.
I kept a basic rhythm while Lawrence played over the top. This is just a 30-sec sample from near the end, we played for about ten minutes nonstop. My soft-ass palms were ouchy and red at the end of that 10 min, and the lesson went for an hour 😆

This band has been performing in Accra for decades, they are not young, yet they can play and dance for hours. Incredible!

Well that was the best Ghanian dance lesson so far - it ended in a fresh coconut to drink and eat, hacked with a machete by our dance teacher. The kids were in the background copying our bad dancing laughing their heads off.
