Kelli, 26, was raised by a strict father. He ruled his home through fear and punishment.

At 7, she went into his money drawer. She took about 5 dollars in quarters for candy at school. When she got caught, she got his wrath. “Did you take this from my drawer?” He asked. She went directly into freeze unable to speak. She got his wrath. And learned quickly to never tell the truth to him again.

Kelli grew up in a tense home where she could never be herself. She also witnessed her siblings take his brutal punishments. Slowly, she became better at lying, and hiding, and sneaking around his rigid rules.

By high school she was dating but knew better then to let her dad know. She’d tell her parents she was with friends or studying after class. Never did she feel safe enough to tell the truth. To be who she actually was. Or to feel accepted or actually seen as a person.

Her partner Max is laid back and lacks the intense control issues of her father. But Kelli finds herself lying to him. About even small things. He’ll call and ask her what she’s doing and she’ll say “oh I’m working” when she’s really watching Netflix. Or he’ll ask who she was with and she won’t tell him everyone that was there. It’s almost like it comes out without her awareness. Or conscious thought…

Max has caught her in some inconsistencies and asks her about it. Kelli gets defensive and shut down. She feels like she’s being interrogated, like she was as a child with her father. But max comes from a genuine place and is curious about why she’s at time dishonest or not fully transparent.

Kelli is lost in her head. Always drafting the next script or excuse. Always plotting and planning— because she was given no other option. Punishment and fear was all she knew, and now her hypervigilant mind is telling her to hide and lie to stay safe.

This comes across as her being sneaky, but this is what she knows as survival

As a couples therapist, I saw a clear pattern in relationships.

It went:
1. Emotional needs have gone unmet in childhood. Grew up with a feeling of loneliness and lack of belonging.

2. Fantasy begins (typically before age 7) where child develops a fantasy world. Usually around a family on tv, a desire to marry the perfect person, or a belief that someone will rescue them.

3. Culture reinforces fantasy through ideas there is “the one” or the “perfect person” or the “fairy tale”

4. Adult subconsciously believes there is one right person who will make everything fall into place.

5. Adult projects all of their unmet childhood needs onto partner. This is subconscious. They believe their partner should make them happy, cater to their wounds, and unconditionally love them in a way a parent could not.

6. Ultimately the partner cannot meet these expectations. There’s disillusionment, anger, and pain.

7. Person goes on search to again find the perfect person without properly grieving the romantic fantasy.

Awakening means we have to grieve the fantasy. We have to recognize that people are human. And they will bother us, annoy is, and activate us.

And more importantly, love is a practice. It’s not a feeling. It involves conscious choice and effort from BOTH people.

It involves waking up and saying: “we are in this together. I choose you. Through our relationship (even the difficult times) I learn more about myself. I develop more awareness and resilience. Together we build trust. Together we are not perfect, but I have matured enough to value the peace of security over the chase of the fairy tale.”
