We are a boutique yoga studio based in Dapto. Niyama Yoga was born out of a desire to open a small home based studio where the focus could remain on students, community and the teachings of yoga without having to sacrifice any of these things to keep a large commercial studio afloat. Classes are based around Hatha Yoga but can at times be flow based or restorative depending on the needs of the students on the day. Classes always incorporate asana (posture) but at times will also be woven with pranayama (breath work), dhyana (mediation) and philosophy. The studio is fully equipped with mats, props, a kitchen to top up your water bottle or tea cup and bathroom facilities.

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that Niyama Yoga is back in business. This November/December I have the absolute pleasure of teaching at a surf/yoga retreat with my oldest friend in Vanuatu. This retreat is going to be epic, right on the beach, amazing relaxing yoga, nature on your doorstep and if you haven't been to Vanuatu you are missing a trick. Announcement. It’s with a heavy heart that I need to announce Niyama Yoga is closing it’s doors. Thank you all for being such amazing students, teachers and support. I am closing the studio because I just don’t have the amount of time to devote to the studio that I need to keep it amazing for you guys and I don’t want to teach classes that I feel aren’t good enough for you. You have been an amazing community and I have loved every minute of teaching you. Don’t give up on yoga, I’m not, find some online videos or checkout some of the beautiful local studios/teachers.

Backbend week or as like to call it heart opener week. Class has been exploring active and passive backends as well as this exercise to feel where it feels good to open the front of the body into a big heart opener. If you want to try this yourself, place the back of the hands together and place the fingers on the lower belly, curve in towards them then push them out from that spot and roll backwards in both horizontally and vertically. The fingers should feel like they are standing on the peak of a mountain.Try the same at the solar plexis and finally the sternum. Where feels right and open? Also a lovely way to connect heart opners to breath outside of the usual cat/cow and a great lunch time strech for you office workers 😉 Om Shanti beautiful beings ॐ

Forward fold to high plank followed by an extended side plank. This will work those arms and core. Feel free to stay in your fold or plank as long as you like, I've just sped it up for demonstration purposes. Also if restorative is more your thing feel free to move to breath here. Om Shanti ✌

You are enough. Always have been and always will be. Your worth can't be earned by achievements or getting somewhere, conversely it can't be lost when you think you haven't done enough, have fallen short of some arbitrary goal. Start listening to your body when you burn out, keep chasing some other version of yourself, push push push. Be gentle, be kind. Stop and soak in that you are there and always have been, the place where you are already enough. Om Shanti ॐ

Meet the beautiful love child of viparita karani and shoulderstand. Take a block under the lower back across the sacrum. Remember the block has many heights which I'm demonstrating here. Take your arms out into a t position making sure you try and get the same action of the shoulders as in a full shoulderstand, making sure to press the tops of the shoulders down and not close off across the chest. Stay, chill a while, let the blocks make this passive.

Version of standing splits from tonight's class. Although some of us can throw our leg into something "yoga inspirational" tonight we come back to basics. Working on the four corners of the standing leg, keeping the lifted leg active, energy through the back foot as well. Everything we do with energy, mindfulness and love. Everybody can do a version of this. Use blocks if you can't reach the floor. Use a wall to press your back foot into. Keep the back foot on the floor. You don't have to look like a flexible god, keep the posture authentic for you and be happy that your body got you there. Om Shanti ✌

CLASS IS ON TONIGHT AND AIR CONDITIONED :)
I once had a male yoga teacher tell me a pose was unreachable for someone who was larger chested *face palm*. Hopefully I include enough variations for all your bodies, if not pull me aside after class, call me, send me an email but never be silent and think it's your body. Yoga is for everyone and I'm not serving my yoga community if I can't find a variation for you. Big love yogis x
