A few weeks ago we played in the first ever combined St Vincent’s Private and Mater Private Golf Day. Staff from both the Sydney campuses of St Vincent’s Health Australia participated and it was a great opportunity to get some Vitamin D with colleagues and friends.

Nothing like a bit of interspecialty rivalry to get those competitive juices flowing. Although it was raining birdies, we couldn’t match and his team who took home the win!

It was straight back to work though. One shoulder and one knee at a time… ⛳️🏌️🔥🦅

Another robotic knee replacement! But check the screen out… the robot knows my name 😜. It’s surgery just how I like it - precision and order - with the patient walking the same day! I love doing my bit to end arthritis one joint at a time! Back to function here we come!

A few weekends ago I was in Singapore at an Advanced Shoulder Arthroscopy Course. It was an amazing opportunity to catch up with colleagues from around the world, watch and operate with some international GIANTS of shoulder arthroscopy and also get to exchange tips and tricks with each other. I love sharing surgical techniques and knowledge so we can all improve! Life long learning is the best!!

Now this day was a cracker!! Some of you may recognise Allan, one of the best orthopaedic scrub nurses I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Just over a month ago our team got to surprise him and his wife on their special day as they welcomed their beautiful baby daughter! Congrats Allan and Jan, enjoy your little one, they grow up so quick!! 👶🍼💩😴

This is what arthroscopic (keyhole) shoulder surgery looks like… What’re we all looking at? A whole series of 4K screens showing the inside of your shoulder which we’re reconstructing!

If only we could use them to watch the when we’re done! Go Aussie Go!! Good luck girls!

Check out this amazing team!

The 4 of us have been working together for many years now and it’s funny to realise that although you may not remember these 3, they were essential to getting you better with surgery. Dr Roma (anaesthetist), Orthopaedic Scrub Nurse Mario and Dr Al (assistant surgeon) are not only ultimate professionals but they’re fun and relaxed which makes a great environment for surgical success. The best thing is I trust them to take care of you and me, so all I have to do is concentrate on you!

ACL tears and reconstructions are pretty common, but what do they actually look like?

In the first picture this is a torn ACL - see the loose fibres pointing upwards, rolled over on themselves and not attached to the bone. Then compare this to the second picture of a well reconstructed ACL with tight fibres going diagonally across the screen. That’s what we want to see!!

Back to pivoting sports! Here we come!

This is Greg. One of Australia’s finest posties! He also loves racing push bikes in the velodrome…well he did, until his knee arthritis stopped him. But now he’s had a robotic total knee replacement, he’s back on his trainer and considering racing once again. Did you also know that Greg would average 25000 steps in a 5 hour shift? That’s long distances!! No wonder his knee was sore! Go Greg Go!!

Everyone meet Dr Davis. Many of you may already know him but he is one of four elite assistant surgeons I am lucky to work with.

What does an assistant surgeon do? Positioning, prepping, retracting, anticipating… the list goes on. All these things allow me to concentrate and operate optimally.

Trust in the team is essential for a good surgical outcome.

Could it almost be like what a caddy does for a pro golfer? Perhaps we should ask Dr Davis how I did as his caddy over the weekend!

Last shoulder replacement before Christmas! (Maybe)

It’s been over a year of using this latest technology - the mixed reality headset - to manipulate a hologram of the patient’s surgical plan into the actual surgical field.

What are my thoughts?
1. The detail and 3D visualisation is amazing!
2. It is the way of the future and will continue get better and better. Exciting updates to happen next year!
3. It is confidence boosting for the patient and surgeon. We need to embrace technology to further the science of surgery and use everything available to help those with arthritis and pain.

One thing is for sure. The future is bright! Bring on 2023!! We can do this together!! Stay safe everyone 👍

Together with you, we will achieve the best outcome possible.

I am an Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in surgery of the shoulder and knee, and am committed to providing the best possible care for my patients.

I firmly believe in creating individualised treatment plans for each of my patients, and this involves working closely with a range of medical and allied health professionals including physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, sports physicians, pain specialists and radiologists.

Born in Sydney, I completed my early education at Sydney Grammar School and then went on to study medicine at the University of New South Wales, where I graduated with honours.

I am committed to education, training, and research. I regularly teach and mentor orthopaedic trainees and am an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. I have a passion for research, which allows me to utilise the most up to date knowledge, and most accurate surgical techniques to benefit my patients.
