🌟✨ Celebrating Milestones! ✨🌟

This week, I had the absolute honor of receiving a heartfelt gift from one of my amazing patients who just celebrated 5 years cancer-free.

Every cancer journey is filled with challenges, but witnessing the resilience and strength of my patients reminds me every day why I chose this profession.

Thank you for trusting me with your care. This beautiful gift will always remind me to focus on the moments of joy.

Hayley, our amazing medical receptionist, has this week become a certified speech pathologist and is starting in her new job next week. Over the past 3 and a half years, Hayley has become like family for us. At the same time as being the most amazingly dedicated receptionist, she has managed to complete her masters in speech pathology. She will be an absolute credit to the speech pathology profession. We can’t wait to see her flourish in the next stage of her life. Hayley, you’re amazing.

And that’s a wrap for the 2024 ANZHNCS ASM. The convener, Dr Kevin Nguyen, along with his organising committee, put together the most amazing interdisciplinary agenda and we had the largest attendance ever; 390 registrants!

The Australian and New Zealand Head & Neck Cancer Society, , is a multidisciplinary society with a simple aim; to promote quality care for all head and neck cancer patients. This conference epitomised that aim. I’m so proud to be taking on the presidency of this society as it’s a cause about which I’m incredibly passionate. I’m excited to be taking this on alongside Prof Eng H. Ooi, immediate past president, Dr Camile Farah, vice president, Dr Felix Sim, treasurer and Dr Aoife McGarvey, secretary, as well as all of the executive committee.

And a special shout out to Dr Jolanda Ma for presenting our poster outlining a case report on a very rare case of small cell carcinoma occurring in the palatine tonsil which was salvaged with trans-oral robotic surgery.

July 27th is World Head and Neck Cancer Day. Head and Neck cancer is rare representing only 3-4% of all cancers diagnosed each year in Australia. All treatments for head and neck cancer are tough and affect patients in ways that cannot be ‘hidden’ as most treatments will have an adverse impact on speech and swallowing.

To raise awareness on World Head and Neck Cancer Day yesterday, the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Nursing Group Inc hosted a day dedicated to teaching clinicians involved in the care of these complex patients. It’s was fabulous to hang out with friends old (and new) including Marin, the Westmead ENT Nurse practitioner who organised and hosted the day (and whom I’ve known since I was a registrar at Westmead many a long year ago!) and Orsi Kokai from Oncology Recovery Services Inc who continues to passionately advocate for lymphoedema management in patients recovering from treatment.

Let’s come together to support those affected by head and neck cancer and spread the message of early detection and prevention.

What do you call five female transoral robotic surgeons presenting at a conference- progress! From right to left; Dr Samantha Hassid, Dr Brittany Barber, Dr Meghan Turner, Dr Erika Crosetti and me. It was inspirational to get to meet these forces of nature. Thank you to my mentor for putting together such a fabulous programme for the Society of Robotic Surgery Meeting these past few days.

In 2020, I had the privilege of being awarded the Chris O’Brien Travelling Fellowship from . A little pandemic got in the way but 2024 has meant I’ve been able to take advantage of this opportunity to travel overseas and learn about how other centers utilise the surgical robot for head and neck cancers. First stop has been Mayo Clinic in Rochester where Prof Katherine Van Able, along with all the other amazing Mayo staff, kindly hosted me this week. It has been a simply amazing experience. It’s medicine on a scale that I actually found difficult to comprehend; over 80 operating rooms, an intercom between every operating room and the pathology lab (which was in the operating room complex) and an oncall clinical photographer. Just a few things that blew my mind! Next stop Orlando.
