Kirketon Road Centre

Kirketon Road Centre Gadigal Country KRC is a health care service that provides free and anonymous care to people who experience barriers to accessing health care. What's our story?

KRC opened in 1987 at a time when it was clear that existing clinics and healthcare services were not well adapted to the needs of certain groups of people in the area. We believe that healthcare is a basic human right and that some populations have poorer access to healthcare. We are funded to provide services to:

1. People who inject drugs or are experiencing drug related harms
2. Sex workers
3. People experiencing homelessness
4. At-risk young people under 25, experiencing any of the above
5. People in urgent need of sexual health or HIV/Hepatitis care

Last month, with full hearts we said goodbye to Dr John Kearley.

Here are some words from Dr Cappetta, who worked very closely with him, as she speaks about John's compassion, care and commitment to supporting people with their health.

For more than 30 years with NSW Health, the majority of them at the Kirketon Road Centre, “Dr John” as he was affectionately known, became inseparable from the service itself. His presence, his approach, and his commitment to care shaped the place, and the people within it. Day after day, he showed up to work with quiet dedication, providing care to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

His impact reached far beyond the consultation room. Clients sought him out by name, trusting in his humanity. Colleagues, found in him a mentor, a guide, and often the calm voice of reason. He advocated for his patients and the purpose of our work, never losing sight of what mattered most. Many who worked alongside him over the years didn’t just move on, they remained his friends.

There is so much we will miss. The unexpected cakes and flowers that brightened the day, the way he would step in and see a client in need. His deep knowledge of our clients and the rich history of the service and the many changes and advances he both witnessed and helped shape. And, of course, his unmistakable sense of style, which brought a unique character and quiet flair to work. It was a special treat to see what Dr John was wearing to work each day.

Not long ago, a client walked into the waiting room and called out, “Is Dr John here?” It’s a question we’ve heard many times and one we will hear many times again. Dr John leaves behind a legacy for our clients, his colleagues, and the service he helped define.

To Dr John, thank you. Thank you for your decades of service, your wisdom and mentorship, and for the dignity and respect you showed every person who walked through our doors. Your presence will continue to be felt in the culture, the care, and the community you helped build.

National Close the Gap Day is today.

You might have noticed that in the community room we have been raising awareness and promoting some needed actions to address the gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in areas such as health.

Today and every day, KRC stands in solidarity with our Indigenous friends, clients and colleagues to push for real change. Access to adequate health and social resources can often be difficult to find and for our First Nations communities, experiencing health disparities and social inequalities more than other populations in Australia.

It is through having a yarn, intentionally listening, learning, advocating and taking action, that real change can occur, and we can close the gap between our Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Today is also not the only day that someone can seek support, or aim to learn more about what inequities do exist. We are always happy to provide support or appropriate referrals as needed.

Sangita is a social worker who has come back to KRC after 20 years!

In between her stints at KRC, she's been overseas working across the Asia Pacific on HIV and s*xual health programs with diverse communities. She's passionate about providing compassionate, client centred support and creating safe spaces for people to access helathcare.

She's a notorious karaoke mic hog who loves belting out a tune-ask her what her fav song to sing is! And is obsessed with her two mad rescue pups Sukhi and Chez.

She's so glad to be back at KRC!

💛 We’re hiring!!

At Kirketon Road Centre in Kings Cross, we work alongside people who are often excluded from mainstream healthcare - people who inject drugs, s*x workers, people experiencing homelessness, Aboriginal communities and young people at risk.

We’re looking for someone to lead our Counselling Unit and support clients with crisis counselling, opioid treatment case management, social welfare support and health promotion - both in-clinic and through outreach.

If you care about meeting people where they’re at and walking alongside community, this role might be for you.
