Australian Pancreatic Cancer Genome Initiative (APGI) Accelerating the translation of scientific discoveries to improve outcomes for pancreatic cancer patients

The APGI was formed to support Australia’s involvement with the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and acquires high-quality biological samples and health information from Pancreatic Cancer patients across Australia. The APGI aims to comprehensively analyse the genomes, epigenomes and transcriptomes of 500 pancreatic tumours to identify novel genes in the development of pancreatic cancer.

The APGI is the proud recipient of the 2018 Premier's Award for Outstanding Cancer Research “Wildfire Award“- that recognizes a piece of research that has had global impact and is considered a landmark study in its field. The prize was awarded for our 2015 Publication– "Whole genomes redefine the mutational landscape of pancreatic cancer".

This was the work of hundreds of talented researchers and clinicians, particularly our colleagues from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, The University of Melbourne and the University of Glasgow. An incredible team of dedicated researchers.

If you’re a researcher you’ve no doubt experienced the frustration of the red tape involved in sharing materials with collaborators. Some days it seems like we're drowning in paperwork. In this recent publication we explore how complicated contracts can delay the sharing of material and actually slow the research down all together. We also showcase ways it can be done efficiently, and to benefit all.

A collaboration with our colleagues at the University of Tasmania Center for Law and Genetics.

Cutting through the red tape in sharing material for research by Amber Johns | Sep 12, 2018....Researchers are drowning in paperwork. We often spend more time filling in paperwork than we do in the lab doing actual research. Crazy right? If you’re a researcher you’ve no doubt experienced the fru...

This week is Neglected Cancers Week- highlighting those less common, but lethal cancers, like Pancreatic Cancer, where survival rates remain in single digits. We want to take this week to reflect on the groundbreaking medical research underway in our own backyard which will change the trajectory of this disease.

Thanks to the Garvan Institute of Medical Research for marking this week and highlighting this important group of cancers.

Pancreatic cancer symptoms may be so vague they are often overlooked as "normal". When we piece together the warning signs of pancreatic cancer as a group of symptoms, we can help diagnose it earlier. The Cancer Council NSW has put together real life stories of symptoms on this informative video.

A diagnosis of pancreatic cancer can be overwhelming, it raises many questions: What is the pancreas? Where is it? What does it do? What is pancreatic cancer...
