Procedure: Bilateral breast reconstruction with DIEP flaps (3 months post operation)

Options for breast reconstruction after breast cancer can generally be categorised as own tissue (autologous) or implant based reconstruction.

Each approach has its own benefits and drawbacks. This patient underwent own tissue reconstruction (harvested from the abdomen) after mastectomy for breast cancer. Whilst the procedure and recovery is longer compared with implant based reconstruction, the patient now has a reconstruction that is permenant and will grow with her and is soft much like a native breast.

Procedure: Bilateral Breast Reduction.
3 months post operation.

This patient was experiencing symptoms associated with large breasts including back and neck pain as well as rashes in skin folds under the breasts.

This patient underwent breast lift and reduction. Lifting and reshaping of the breasts can restore the breasts to a more youthful appearance with the trade off being scars placed on the breast.

Scar minimisation starts at the surgical planning phase. Techniques are used intra - operatively to minimise scars as well. The third and final part of scar minimisation is during the post operative period which is equally as important.

Duration: 3 hrs under general anaesthesia.
Recovery: Day case. 2 weeks off work, full recovery at 6 weeks

It was a pleasure to speak today at the 42nd Annual Course in Paediatrics at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick on major limb trauma and microsurgery in children. It is a privilege to work at Sydney Children’s Hospital with a great multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses and allied health staff.
