Next time you feel challenged by your emotions remember this 90 second rule🩵When an emotion is triggered, the body experiences a wave of chemicals which is what then creates the physical sensations we associate with an emotion. Anxiety - heart racing, tingling, or that classic general uneasiness. After 90 seconds, this chemical surge fades and our body will return to its normal steady state.
BUT if we continue to dwell on the emotion by feeding it with mental narratives like 'oh no I'm feeling anxious again or what if that super far fetched worst case scenario does happen' we will then re-trigger the chemical surge and maintain that anxious state with these mental emotional loops.
Understanding this can help us to navigate these tricky emotional states.
Recognise the initial brief surge, notice the sensations, observer, no story, breathe, notice let it pass. 90 seconds and you're done ✨️
